Does anyone have any info/stories about fitting an after market turbo to a 79 series cruiser?. My main concern is that i have heard that the gearbox cant handle it especially when towing.

The HZJ79 runs the R151F gearbox, the same as the TD Prado, TD Hilux and older Bundera's, etc. They were also in the HZJ105's and can be an issue in them, especially running a turbo and / or larger tyres, towing, etc.
No where near as strong as the older H55F (75, 60 series) or H150F (80 series) as used in the factory turbo 79's.
It probably comes down to your driving habits.

3rd cops it, i have heard of a mod that fixes that for the r150 thou, but for pure fix and never worry, an 80 series dx box and transfer is the go...straight on and in and no more worries

the output splines into the transfer case wear away to practically nothing within 150,000kms too.
they really are a hilux gearbox, not a cruiser gearbox!
Though that said, the R151 in my work truck has withstood 180,000kms of abuse and having a PTO hydro pump hanging out of the side of it!

yes they do wear the main shaft & transfer input shaft & transfer input gear splines as do the earlier 75 series, But! this can be fixed there are modified gears & shafts available to rectify this problem.

$2800 if you dont get to it before the gearbox shatters its 3rd gear syncro cluster and damages itself...
Thats what it cost dad to get his fully overhauled with the upgraded bits.
