Was getting a bit hard to change back into first and 2nd so decided to drain the oil and try the Castrol vmx-m oil, the book stated it takes 2.6 litres, so I bought a 4 litre container.

I drained the oil and did the diffs while I was at it, come time to fill the gearbox it has taken 5 litres and is still not flowing out of the filler plug.

I am thinking one fo two things - the book is wrong and I need more or I am using the wrong filler plug.

Anyone that can shed some light on things would be great..

The filler plug I took out was near the top of the box on the drivers side. I cant see any other plugs below that.

There was one on the passengers side but it looked like it had been welded to the box or something...

the plug you want is on the passengers side, about 2" forwards of the thick steel dividing plate and 3-4" up from the bottom of the box

The drainplugs should be a flat head with a small magnet at the tip.
See pics;

Gearbox - 2.7 litres

Transfer Case - 1.3 litres

Aswell Toyata should all be 24mm so that may help finding the right one

When i was 16 (and a little bit stoned  ) I changed the engine oil on my Honda City Pro-T paddock bomb. Put in 6 litres and thought....damn this is taking a long time to fill up to the top.

go to super crap and get a oil suction pump $20?

Put the hose in the bottle. pull the handle out to suck up oil, put end of hose in to filler plug in the g/box, push handle in to empty oil into box.

peice a pish ;)

just watch dribbling oil everywhere on the driveway :bad-words:

i have the hand pump you put on a 20l drum. Works well but is a pain as a one man job unless you're under a hoist.

other option i've used is a cheap drill operated oil/water pump you can buy from bunnings. That and some clear ttubing and a cordless drill is pretty easy and clean.

Did mine today, bought the oil ($39 from supercrap) and an oil syring from the same place for around $26

Word of warning, if you can help it, the space between the box where the drain plug is and the tail shaft is VERY tight, just enough space to barely fit the socket and ratchet into... I had to go out and buy a new socket and ratchet to do the job... price of job all up was around $90 - but will be cheaper next time...

Took the 80 for a test drive after I did it and it did take a good 5km to notice any difference, but after about 10-15km of driving, it became a dream to slip into gear and the hairy change from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 3rd is gone, no grind, crunch or anything...

The VMX-M does a fantastic job on the 80 series box.

Total money spent... $1910 less than the quoted price for a rebuild.
