Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi Guys

Me and my father are trying to fit an LSD to the front of the LN65 live axled hilux.

Now it doesn't quite work, because the long axle shaft hits the inside of the LSD! This causes the swivel hub on the LHS to become excessivly tight, and in theory prevents the LSD from working properly. I thought it would be the same as the open centre, but not quite!

Has anyone had this problem before, and how have you overcome it?

If you can help please do, before dad trims the axle shaft unesicarily.

i have done it before but didn't have this prob. i say just trim the shaft

Hey thanks Killalux, but this isn't going to work without something changing. I really thought it would just bolt up, but I cannot figure out why its done this.

The only other way, short of spacers etc I can think of making it fit, is to set the diff backlash to a stupidly large value. Than he'd destroy the C&P I reckon.

I think the axle will be shortened, anyone know if any aftermarket front axles are slightly shorter? Or am I grasping at straws here...

Its as simple as cutting 8mm off the end of the axle. It also happens in with some rear axles as well. There are some slight variations in the length of front axles. And the front was never fitted with an LSD from factory so it was never an issue.

Just cut the axle. I have done heaps of them with a drop saw.

Hey thanks heaps Ruff. Just imagine I've got to keep the axle nice and cool with some water whilst cutting it. Was going to cut 10mm off if no one could give us an alternate solution.

Do you know if we could have the same problem fitting the air locker to the rear as well? Or is it only the LSDs.

You wont get it hot enough to effect anything when cutting it. You should have no issues with the air locker. The LSD in the front wont make it much better offroad. The Toyota LSD is a very poor LSD at the best of times. Im yet to see one that actually works like it should offroad for more than a few trips after being rebuilt.

Thats why the LSD is going in the front. Dad already had the thing, and wanted to put it in the back, I talked him out of that knowing it would do SFA after a short period. In the front it might last a bit longer then it would in the back. This one has been rebuilt quite tight, so should give him a bit of work before it packs it in. The air locker in the back should be the shizz though .
