you can but some things will be;
Rangie is only ten spline axles.
One shock mount is rearward.
Course spline pinion.
Its been awhile so I could be mistaken but these things came to mind almost instatly.
I would not bother
unless changed both should be 3.54ratio

ok ratios should be the same, the pinion will have a course spline in the 84 rangie, and the side gear will not accept your disco 24spline axles as they are 10 spline.
If you mean just the bare third member - no carrier and no cwp then I ask WHY?

Im asking for a mate, the rear diff in his disco has died and he has a rangie in the paddock and thought they may be the same..

if the disco has grease caps on the drive flanges it has 24 spline axles. The 84 RR will have 10 spline. Not sure exactly when the discos changed, I believe it was sometime in 94.
