Outer Limits 4x4 Board

anyone know what i should be paying for a clutch changeover , fit only. in a 62series landcrusier. i just dont have the time to do it my self.

Times guide says 4 hrs. Real world times depending on who's doing it would probably be somewhere between 4 to 6 hrs. Rates per hour vary from shop to shop obviously so check this but pick someone trustworthy.

Things you'd look at supplying yourself would be:

clutch kit (centre plate/pressure plate/throw out bearing)
spigot bearing
rear main seal(aka rear crank shaft seal)
gear oil

Also allow for flywheel machining too.

Got my clutch, among other things, through him and it was heaps cheaper than anywhere else.

4-6 hrs sounds about right. But workshop will charge anywhere from $60-120/hr... maybe more.

Flywheel shouldn't be more than $40 to machine.

gota a few quotes today....$350 and 280. might just set a side the time and do it my self. least i know its done how i want it..... with a few beers and a friday nite start, i hope its done by sunday....lol

these boxes are FUCKIN heavy... many have done it themselves, and swore never to do it again.

good if you have hoist and g/box jack.

This man speaks the truth.

I'm sure the cruiser is different but I just bolted my clutch up in my G60 build (see sig) and I would hate to change teh clutch with teh body on later on. Just the transfer/ gearbox weight at least 120kg.

On the bright side I will have to take the whole engine out to change my clutch once the body is on

I just did my clutch in an 88 hilux and having done many clutches in the past, and never in a workshop, I thought this would be an easy task. ( at a mates workshop with full use of hoists tools lifts etc )

If someone can do it for a few hundred dollars for god sake let them do it !
I am glad I did it myself but I had ALL DAY to do it. Everything always takes MUCH longer than you anticipate. And nothing goes to plan so be warned champ. BUT GOOD LUCK!

yeah i agree about the clutch being a big job, been doing mine in a small shed with stuff all tools, big job to do yourself and if the car is a daily its best to take it to a mechanic so its in onde day and sometimes out the same day

I've done my cruisers clutch on the carport floor with a trolly jack. It's good to know i could do it again if the need arise, but i'd be happy to pay someone $280-$350 to do it for me! I almost had the 'box roll off the jack on top of me, luckily the PTO actuator cable kinda caught it

dont know about other 4wds, but a steel bar wedged between leaf springs and box on a hilux works well

I pulled mine out on a wednesday, back together on Thursday. Prick of a job i hope i never have to do again. I'd happily pay $280 - $350 for unpainful use of my back and neck.

Heavy, awkward, uncomfortable mutha of a job. You're back and neck will be sore for days afterwards. So much easier with hoist and proper jack.

But with a Nissan you may only ever do it once in it's lifetime, not every time you go wheelin

got a 4 runner with stuffed clutch changed it on the grass in my back yard prick of a job sold it a jear later and got a surf, 6 mths later clutch goes changed that, garadge and g/box jack much easier, 1000ks later crack head so put hilux motor and clutch in just to find out the clutch is stuck and need to drop the box again should be doing it tomorow

i just did the clutch and rear main in my 40, relatively easy though because the front half of the cab comes off.
i dont pull the box and trans out, just crane the engine out the front.
i do a fair amount of mechanical work for my mates, but i refuse cashies for people i dont know, if ANYTHING goes wrong with thier car, your the first to be shot with "awww what did you do to it??" regardless of the problem, then thiers liability etc,

I would have thought the price would be anywhere up to $500. With the prices you've got I would not even consider doing it myself.

I paid $900 for parts and labour on my Maverick clutch. I would have to check how that broke down into parts vs labour, but I would have though labour made up about $500 of it. Could be wrong though.

I still wouldn't do a clutch in a 60 if I could afford to get it done by someone else

Yep sounds about right...my Maverick is in the mechanics as we speak getting clutch done...

$420 in Labour
$70 odd in Flywheel Machining
+ Rear Main Seal

My Xtreme Outback clutch kit cost me $470

im gunna push it as far as i can b4 having to change it. its jumping when taking of when cold only in 1st, seems to stop when warm, and isnt slipping.
i was beeing a tight ass so i could spend money eles where, and with all these posts im no remined when i done the thrust bearing.... yep im payin someone to do it.....
