possible locker lsd contact

Post by stariondriver »

i emailed phanton grip and asked if there daihatsi diff lsd would fit and here is there response so far

"If they have the same diff then yes. But to be sure you can ship us the diff or take the following measurements:

1. Open space between axle gears
2. Open space between spider gears
3. Diameter of the diff pin "

here is there email;

They are rubbish - they DO NOT LOCK, at best they are a very substandard LSD and place great strain on the diff.

Have a look at the way they work and you will see what I mean. Some one in Europe did at least one for a Feroza as a prototype and nothing more seems to have been heard of it.

Do a search and I am sure you will find it - with pics of the parts.

Yep - I went through the same steps as you some time ago and did some research on them.

Quote..

"Phantom Grip" The "Phantom Grip" differential is the poor cousin to the clutchpack. It works in exactly the same manner. The difference is that instead of installing a dedicated set of clutches and springs, the Phantom Grip installs a spring-loaded metal block that rides along the nose of the spider gears in the differential, using the metal-metal contact between the block and the gear as its friction surface.

Aside from the dubious wisdom of placing a signifigant sideload on a gear not designed to take it, the Phantom Grip's main problem is the relatively small friction surface (which limits the amount of locking possible) but also one of wear - as the block and the gear lap into each other the amount of friction between them will drop, along with locking potential. This is a band-aid solution at best.

End Quote

They are also surprising expensive when you compare them with a mechanical locker but can be fitted to virtually any diff.

worth a try anyway versus zero options for a stock diff. then again i would prefer a spare diff to weld up.
i see how they work and its not ideal but might offer some better grip anywhoes

Well not zero options anymore. but certainly not cheap options.

If the Phantom doesn't work then its not the worlds end, but it does stress the 3rd member pretty badly. Its a catch 22, huge preload, might get good action but big stress on a diff thats not overly strong in the first place.

On the other hand low preload, low stress on diff but not much action.

Let us know how it works - might be a better front option.

Ah yes - if only anything about Daihatsu's was simple or cheap.
