I am in need of getting a geasrbox rebuild on a 2.8 GQ which has got 220,000 on the clock. I have only owned the vehicle since 180,000 and I know the gear box in the 2.8s is light weight, I don't do any towing but have no idea if the vehicle was used for towing prior to this but the vehicle does run 33s which i guess has put more strain on the box.
I will probably only do another 40,000 - 50,000 kms max in this vehicle as it is not a daily driver. Does anyone know if you can put the stronger 4.2 gear box into this car, or have reccomendations on what to get and roughly how much a rebuild should cost?

Cant put the 4.2 box in it. Not without bellhousing adapters anyway.
You should be able to pickup an import box from various engine importers. RD28 trolls are common in japan and you'd be very unlucky to get one which has seen towing use.
edit; Check for sale section. There's an RD28 GQ gearbox for sale in melbourne. Your lucky day

the 4.2 gear box will not fit. The gearbox in the 2.8 is the same as what is used with the 3litre petrol patrol. Which is the same as whats used in a nissan skyline and a holden commadore.
personaly i would not rebuild the gearbox and just pick up a second hand unit. there was one on ebay recently. Or put a wanted add on here you will get a few replys.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to gear boxes and ratios etc. With the 33s, should I look for something different at all to compensate for the bigger tyres than standard, or just get a standard box again?
