these days i think if u fart in your car u need it looked at or approved so im guessing yes a fairly major mod like reloctaing a fuel tank SHOULD be plated and approved and OKED BEFORE bothermoving it to make sure its alowed

Why move it or why should it be approved?

Im moving mine upwards about 8 inches or so as I want to run tri 4-link rear end with the axle moved back so that it would sit under the tank.
Maybe Saffrett is having similar ideas?

I can't see the advantages for moving the existing tank inside the vehicle without knowing why you would want to do this in the first place? Maybe a bit more info on what you drive over ie is the tank getting smashed up? If so, a cheaper alternative like getting a bash plate made for it would alleviate that problem. If you want clearance with the tank not being in the original location at all, then maybe look at getting a fuel cell or custom tank made to go behind the front seats (and bigger capacity) I don't see the benefit of boxing in an original tank which will take up more space than a custom tank would.
As far as legalities goes on the subject I have no idea, but do a search on fuel cells / tanks for the back of utes, custom tray backs etc & you should find something to do with this topic.

That pretty much covers my views on it.
I reckon its funny that people buy the smallest car available and then dream up heaps of ways of eliminating the small amount of room you do have with fuel cells, shock mounts, ute conversions, spare tyres in wacky positions etc.
Each to their own, but there are lots of better fuel tanks to work with than a sierra tank if you want to move a tank up out of the way in a sierra. sierra tanks are small, don't acommodate EFI, and have that PITA angled mounting flange.
Here is a LWB 1.6 Vitara (efi) tank set through the floor of a sierra. These tanks are 55L. We fitted a false floor over this and storage was OK, but not great.

The bar work in that looks pretty good Steve. It goes through the floor to the chassis?

There's 21m of 1.75" DOM in that cage, @ $27.00/m... and Greg never rolled on it
Yes, it was tied into the chassis and all the factory hardware installed over the top. It didn't work out quite how I wanted but I was pretty proud of it.
