runnin 35's
hey,
i'm considering upgrading my tyres from 33's to 35's. the change from 30's to 33's have not made any difference to anything mechanical on the car so i'm considering whether i can run 35's or not??? is there any problems i should know about before doing so or is this something that will break things more easily when offroad???

It is possible but be prepared for the gearing to go out the window. From my experience on 35's the benefit of a larger diameter tyre was not justified.. i would have needed 5.29's and would have resulted in me having no front locker. So 33's were definately the best option... My 2 cents anyway.

Why is that? I have both 5.29s and front & rear lockers in my Gen I SWB.Grantw wrote:i would have needed 5.29's and would have resulted in me having no front locker.
Besides clearing 35s and the impact on gearing (huge), you will also incur problems with steering components (pitman and idler arms) more frequently. The bigger tires wear them out more frequently. I run 33x12.5s. When my tires wear out, I'm undecided whether I will stick with 33s or move up to 35s, but I'm thinking I may stay with 33s. 33s are a really good fit with the vehicle.

He had a 3.5 with the bigger diffs which didn't come out with the 5.29's.
To change to them would be a big job and no locker is available for the 5.29 high pinion front diff.
With a 2.3 Diesel & 35's the gearing would be terrible!!

Are you planning to run them all the time or just have them as bush bashing tyres?
If its the second option, you'll be fine with some low range gears. If you want to run them all day....then you will have to put a lot more thought into it. Steering, brakes, gear ratios, clutches, axles, cv's....and the list goes on

More good points. I upgraded my brakes with disks that are 0.7 inches bigger and they do make a noticeable difference. Axle and CV strength is another concern of mine should I decide to step up to 35s, although you can break axles with 33s as well.PajeroSRV wrote:Are you planning to run them all the time or just have them as bush bashing tyres?

I was running some on a gen 2.5(NL) with the 3.5. I cant imagine how slow a 2.3 with some 35s on it would be. I have since removed my 35s as the bodylift was pissing me off because I didnt want to do the supporting mods(gearstick mods). I am still trying to figure out if I want to run some JT2 34.6s and trim a little to prevent scrubbage. But then I need to spend 2.5K to fit some transfer gears.
Theres alot of things to consider.... how much do you want to spend on your truck.

well.....i'm about to put in buggy leaves for the rear.... extended shackles in the rear as well to lift it 2 inches... if i put the 35's on it will lift it again another inch... i want to do the most i can without having to do a front diff swap.... the cost of doing one on the car i have and the cost of buying a car with the diffs i want on it saves me at least $3000..... i cant see myself spending the money on new transfer gears when if something major on the car breaks, i.e. the engine blows up or something... i have no intention of fixing it and will strip it and get a gq 4.2 turbo diesel swb to replace it...

Two weeks ago you were going to put Nissan diffs and 37's on this. Now you are wanting 35's with the standard running gear. The enthusium is great, but, have a think about what you want to finally get out of it.
We have said without low gearing, 35's will be a problem and borders on dangerous.
Remember all the drivetrain is designed for about a 29-30 inch tyre and the leverage a big tyre creates is huge, especially on 25 year old running gear.
Would the embaressment of being overtaken on a hill by a 2.4 Diesel Hilux not be bad enough to put you off.....?
Peace.

hey mate, im new to all this stuff.... after i did some good hard reasearch it was going to cost way to much to do nissan diffs with what i have eg. $7000 just for the front... so im lyk hey, do as much to it as i can, keep it until it dies and then get a nissan or toyota... btw.... its no speed demon atm anyway.....
if you want to get a nissan or toyota, just spend what you need to keep the pajero running, and then save the money for the next truck.
Other wise, get the 5.29s for the LP front diff.
have a look on 4x4wire and pirate4x4, there is a good thread on pirate of a dodge D50 (triton) with a 2.3TD with twin turbos
