Grinding noise from transfer case to drive shaft somewhere.

Hi guys. I just got a HJ60. Just wondering if someone can help us out.

I can get it into low range. But the front wheels sometimes wont drive when I select it. I hear a pretty horrible grinding noise when it's not working. It's not the hubs cause I tested them. It's like the faster the car is moving in low range, the worse it sounds. I think it might be a problem with the connection between the transfer case and the front tail shaft. But I need some help. I took it to the mechanic and he said it was working alright. But I think he didnt have a very good look at it.

If it were me, I would drain the oil in the Transfer case see if there is any metal in it, and refill with new oil. Assumouting you have oil in the Transfer case. I would then remove the front tail shaft and see if the noise happend with the load, if it does its most likely in the front diff.

My son checked out potential noises in my back diff by putting my HJ61 on a 4 post hoist hoist 6ft off the ground. Then jacking up the rear and driving the vehicle up to XX K/hr to check noises, he used some hearing device to check noises inside the diff at various speeds. I could not watch, I thought is was bloody dangerous. This method should find out where your noise is coming from.
