Sounds like you may have a leaking axle seal. Does the oil smell like gear oil? If so this is your problem. If not how long is it since the CV's have been looked at? Water may have been getting into the swivel hub and diluted the grease in the CV's or the swivel hub bearings themselves.

You shouldn't have any problems if you pull out each swivel hub bearing 1 at a time and clean out all the old grease and inspect the bearing condition. I recently did this on mine. All the bearings were fine. Repacked and re-installed.

The Metal spigot that the brgs are on also have a groove machined into them that looks like its for an O-ring. Got 4 from a brg shop for a few dollars and installed thes as well.

If you find that water has been getting into the swivel hubs, inspect the swivel hub seals for any splits etc. If you carefully use the end of a cable tie in between the seal and the swivel ball you can run this around the seal and clean out any dirt and gunk.

If the cable tie goes in easily it is probaly time for new seals, as I found that the cable tie was hard to insert on the side that had no signs of water getting in but the other side was a lot easier, this one definitely had water getting in. As the Cv grease was all milky.
