when i start the pajero there is a squeeling noise. it sounds sort of like a loose fan belt, but its not. could the pulley on the alternator make that sort of noise?

What makes you certain it's not a fan belt. The multi rib belts can be very tight and still squeal.
Isolate to what ancilary it could be by removing one belt at a time. I'd guess alternator belt.

i have pulled all the belts off and there is still a noise. its hard to locate it , but it sort of sounds like the alternator

If you have pulled all the belts off then it can't be the alternator!
It must be coming from behind the timing cover and is something I'd get checked out smartly such as a siezed water pump which could break the cam belt.......

I second the starter motor not releasing quick enough - remove it and give it a clean; it's not a hard job.

ok, i took off the starter off gave it a good clean put it back on the bloody noise is still there. i just cant pin point the noise, its driving me crazy!!!!! and the trouble is if i take it to mechanic he might spend 3 0r 4 hours locating it, and i have to pay for that wasted time. bloody cars

So its not the starter, not any of the ancilaries on the front of the motor(alternator, P/S, A/C or their idlers).....
Maybe if it is driving you that crazy you should get it checked and possibly save yourself alot of money.
