Trailing Arm Geometry

Post by Spimon_NH »

Was just checking out a coil conversion and wondering if the radius arms are set up in a particular way so they don't limit the amout of rotation the axel can have.

Pictures may help (thanks -Richo- for the pics. Hope you don't mind). In the first pic the links (well where they will be) everything is all lined up and sweet.
But once the axle rotates everything twists.

Are the radius arms made up of 2 pieces which can rotate about their long axis or is it just the bushes that allow the movement?
Do the solid ones (eg Snake Racing 'Dropped Radius Arms') rely totally on the forward bushes?
Are they aligned so that movement is possible even without relying on the bushes?

The one I'm wondering about is the change in the angle marked with a yellow dot (angle between the bracket and the arm) and also the angle of the lower arms (the one marked with a blue line is almost straight while the green one has quite an angle in it).

Kinda hard to explain what I mean as it's all rotating in 3D space but I only have 2D pictures. Hope it makes enough sense to someone who knows about these things.
