TOYOTA 100 SERIES v8 PETROL

hI,
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS NORMAL?
TRIED TO GO UP A SANDHILL TODAY AND STUCK HALFWAY, PUT HER IN LOW AND THE DIFF LOCK LIGHT COMES ON THE DASH, IS THIS NORMAL? OR SHOULD IT ONLY COME ON WHEN I HIT THE BUTTON?

thats normal thats the light to say the center diff lock is engaged, if you press the button it will engage it in high range, will always engage as soon as you put it into low range

Did you let it roll forward or back? sometimes the gears are not lined up and as soon as you move forward or back a little bit it will engage. I disconected the auto engage in low range by pulling the plug off my transfer, now it is only operated via the button on the dash, only reason i did this was when reversing the boat down the ramp and pulling it out i dont ride and cook the guts out of the clutch, its actually quite handy when you just want to crawl on a hard surface and now i dont have to worry about the transfer binding up. most useful and cheepest mod i have done to the drive train :D

Also Visserke if you go to tackle soft sand/ sand hill / mud Or and slippery surface press the center diff lock button in before you attack the terrain you will be suprised how much of a difference it makes when both front and rear diffs are getting the same amount of power, more then likely today when you hit the sand hill (if the center diff wasnt engaged) all the weight would have shifted over the arse of the car and your center diff would have thrown most of the power to the front diff making your front wheels scratchin for traction while the rear wheels do sweet F-all. like i said its actually quite suprising the difference it makes!

My 4.5 100 series does the same , when you select low range the Centre diff locks automaticly.
In hi range you can turn it off or on Via the button on the dash

I've had a read of the manual (related to the last of the V8 100's).According to the manual the centre diff lock should only engage when the button is pushed. ie low range without the lock should be achievable. I know the earlier models locked automatically with low range. As stated the manual relates to the very last (Nov 07) V8 100's
