TPS. It stands for Throttle Position Sensor. And yes it's the black thing ontop of the injector pump, i think it has 3 wires ....
It is used to control shift pattern on the auto and to regulate the EGR system amongst other things ... Where did you get your 4.2 Diesel from ?

Here I am :)
I'm told its for the auto gearboxes, but mine is a manual. I've removed mine, but if ANY moisture from river crossings etc get into the now redundant plug, the engine blows huge amounts of black smoke and loses all power until it dries out again (and yes, I have tried to waterproof it).

i don't know what motor you guys are running, but if you have mechanical injection (ie not EFI) then the TPS is often for emission control. that probably explains the black smoke when the plugs get wet.
simply disable the emission system, the EGR and any EGR butterfly in the intake.

Ah, finally confirmed that it had something to do with that darn butterfly:armsup: Will disable find a way to disable it first thing in the morning.

Cheers

i don't know the motor but generally the butterfly is used for EGR and shutoff. some system don't use it for EGR so you will need to drive it and see if it activates. either use vac gauge or a light bulb wired to the solenoid.
if you work out what solenoid does what you should be able to disable the EGR side of it without disabling the shutoff side of it.

if you work it out post some pics of what you did :)

What motor is it? 2.8, 3 or 4.2L

the TPS is usually used on a Auto to control shift patterns

the 2.8L Diesel had this on it for the EGR valve operation and such for the emmisions, as it does for the 3.0L and the 4.2L TDi version.

Mines a TD42 manual. Mechanic has blocked off egr, problem only started when the injector pump was overhauled.
I'm just going to disconnect the the butterfly actuator shaft and leave everything else hooked up

no.....the TPS is for throttle, the butterfly is for shut off.

on the EFI diesels (3.0 and later 4.2) the TPS is the throttle. if it isn't connected the motor dosn't work.
