80 series speedo

I have a 93 GXL cruiser with the 1HZ engine, since we've had the car, the speedo has worked intermittantly when the engine is cold (But the noticable pattern is that it did not work on hotish days)... driving a few hundred meters would typically get the speedo working again.

In the last few weeks however, the speedo has stopped working completely (The odometer still works though, as do all of the other gauges on the instrument cluster with the exception of the trip meter, which never really worked)

What would the most likely cause of this be? I confess to knowing very little about how the speedo works and where the sensor might be, any advice would be very appreciated as we're planning an interstate trip in a months time.

spedo cogs are worn out or the odometer has been wound back, either way, if the odo works, the sensor is driving the spedo, and the spedo itself is faulty.

I think 93 cruiser is a cable driven speedo (not electric), if odometer is working the cable etc is ok, speedo itself may need replacing.

I don't think the GXL's are cable driven speedo as they have an electronic speed sensor thing on the side of the gearbox (I just sold one to Mark for his 1HDFTE conversion). I would be looking to that as the likely cause then maybe the speedo head itself.

If it's the speedo sensor, PM Mud4b (Mark) becasue I don't think he ended up using the speedo sensor that I sold him.

Cheers

I think they were cable driven until 95.

What happened is when Toyota made the new 4.5 donk starting 8/92, they changed the lot to electronic, they changed the wiring plugs on the whole car, they made the autos electronic too....so everything became different at that model change.

I agree as the electronic cable speedo sensor I sold Mark came off my 11/92 petrol auto GXL Cruiser so they were definately electronic in 1992 and long before 1995. I guess they must have changed when they did the 2nd generation one (16 inch wheels, bigger brakes, 4.5 litre petrol etc etc).
