i have a c.r.d nissan patrol, want to get e.g.t gauge to watch temps.
1.. wats the difference between a e.g.t and a phyo gauge! ive been told there the same thing by t.j.m and a few other mobs! is this correct

2.. can anyone recomend a brand of e.g.t or where i can get one from as auto barn are unsure!

3.. also, i have a 3inch exhaust fitted from the turbo back , no muffler, should a be getting the turbo adjusted down! as ive been told that they can over boost.

Any info would be great!

Dyno tune would be a good investment. lets say it wont do any harm :)

I would get a boost gauge too - just as important.

ben, its brand new. fit it nd see what the reading is and make sure it doesnt go much higher i recon youll be fine. remember though when towing the patrol up the ranges we seem to be surrounded by that it will go up quite a bit more than regular driving temps.

so wat if its new, i still wanna know wat a high temp is and wats normal!! want to compare difference with large exhaust and normal!!
IS THAT OK WITH U

Depends where you put the gauge mate but we tend to get out of the throttle around 600 degrees on a factory turbo setup.

I have been doing a bit of reading (newbie) on EGT's Benny and I'm not going to comment on what they should be at for a 3L because they seem to be generally a bit higher than on the 4.2 for which I have been reading. But if you put a guage in it seems the best spot to put the temp probe is in the exhaust just after the turbo so you get the theorectical highest EGT. Would others agree with this?

Also, if you want to put one in have a look at the Autron website at their pillar pods for the GU...very clean way of adding guages and is probably the way I'll be doing it when I eventually get a bit of spare $$.

I run a VDO pyro and boost guage in my truck which I brought off evilbay, would recommend them.

john, wrong way around. for the most accurate readings on the ACTUAL temp the sensor should be fitted to number 1 or 4 cylinders (1 or 6 on a 6 cylinder) pre turbo. that will record a higher number than post turbo but an actual temp of the cylinders not the wash after. what are the 3 litre pistons made from? find the melting point of them under that pressure and dont let it get 200 degrees below that point. you will be one of the only people to do this ben so you wont get much of a response.

Cheers guys, so were looking at about 600 after turbo on standard vehicles.

Im pretty sure where ever you put it the temperatures will be relvent to how hot the motor is running. wether its 600 after the turbo or 800 before!! as long as i know wat it should be in that perticular spot. i think it would be better after the turbo as it would give a good indercation of the turbo and its much easier to install, cheaper and alot of other people have already done it this way.

TJM at brendale are doing it for me, Alot of people have recomended the VDO gauges as they've been around for ages with minimal problems but i am not real keen on the look, personal prefrence i think.. i decided on the auto metre C2 gauges! and they got a pillar pod and a intercooler pipe with a tap in it for the boost gauge. it went in friday for a test fit before the pillar pod gets painted so should go in again sometime this week for final fitment.

these are the gauges:

Yes not too many people fit pyro and boost guages to patrols....

There's some light reading for you Benny. I'm sure you will find all the answers you seek plus some nifty little things to know about zd30's. ;)

it certainly is!! pretty easy though 600 c is 1100 f.
aparently auto metre dont do metric in this gauge, so i was told.

Check out this website, this is the one I've fitted to my truck.

Also read the tech pages, some great info in there.

with those motors i highly recommend fitting the sender in pre turbo. with the variable turbo, how the turbo operates changes the temp of the exhaust after the turbo ie after turbo is not reliable.

Bugger the traditional gauges - they're useless when you're busy driving and don't have time to watch the gauges.

http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthre ... igital+egt

Get a digital egt gauge which you can set an alarm on - be able to hear when you're getting hot!

You can't tune a Direct injection or Common Rail ZD30. They're electronically controlled.

What you can do is adjust how early/late boost comes on by adjusting the VNT actuator rod (don't do this lol) and adjust max boost by adjusting the VNT actuator rod stopper which is behind the rod (closer to the engine block).

This can only be done with the use of a boost gauge. Do not attempt it without. Too much boost and you'll shorten the life of your engine and turbo. Too little boost and you'll melt it! You need to find a happy medium - basically install boost and EGT gauge and watch it like a hawk.

Avoid changing anything if possible...
