Rim size vs Tyre size

What are the pros and cons for fitting larger rims instead of tyres with taller walls??
(ie 315/75R16 has basicaly the same od, width and tread depth as 35/12.50R15)
I'm guessing maybe less chance of spiking the wall on a larger rim but less ballooning of tyre too
Is one prefered over the other?

price and avalibility on the trails??
bigger rubber looks tougher on smaller rims i think...
any other real reasons i duno, spose more people choose rubber to match there rims.. rather than buying new rims to match a certain type of rubber..

airing down would be better on smaller rims id guess coz more sidewall to flex

True 35/12.5R15 & 315/75R16 are much the same however
the 15s: provide greater sidewall flex & bagging
are cheaper
easier to order (the market is bigger)
fit more of the old stuff - which is what most people are running modified i.e. GQ or FJ40 etc.
the 16s: larger rims are fitted- so better on road handling
fit on most later model rigs with bigger brakes i.e. 94- 80 series or GU series 3 etc. (which is
why they were produced)
don't run as hot (should last longer
)

but once you get to bigger sizes like 40", too much sidewall flex is bad. that's why there is a trend to move to 17" rims in the US.

You will also maintain more ground clearance at the same tyre pressure (when lowered to say 20 PSI) as the 16 inch rim tyre will not "squish" (That's the exact scientific term for it
) as much .. You should also maintain better steering response and braking as there will again be less sidewall flex.

35/12.50R15 is illegal on 8" rim - 315/75R16 is legal.

I belive that he meant that the 315/75 has the manufacturers approval to be installed on an 8 inch rim .. as specified in their documentation that diseminated to the general public ... how is that

I can vouch for that! The 60 does handle better with 16x8's and 265/75x16's than it did with 7.50x16's or even the old 31's.
Also seems to 'force' more sand/crap into the brakes, esp the rear drums.
