Hi there,

I put a 1600 carby in my 92 sierra, I originally had a conversion plate for the gearbox, but after finishing the conversion I was having problems with my starter motor, it would make a horrible sound like a crunching sound and would eventually wear out my starter

so I took the gearbox out ripped the plate off took it down to Joe at 4play and he welded on some tabs so that 1.6 would bolt straight to the gearbox without a plate between, BUT I am still having problems with my starter.

I got my starter reconditioned and within a month it started making some wired noises on startup after a few tries it would start but over the next week it got a lot worse and now Its just rooted.

The engine runs fine but I have had nothing but headaches with the starter motor,
Is there anybody out there who may know what the core problem may be I have tried everything!!!

where is the conversion plate from?

is it the 1.6 or 1.3 starter in there.

does the starter sit flush to plate/block?

When you fit a 1.6 to a sierra you need to grind the side of the starter motor to make it clear the block. the 1.6 block is a little wider. If you havent the starter will be running on the piss and bugger up fairly quickly.
The other option is to fit a reduction drive starter, it has a much smaller body and clears the block to rectify the problem.

had a similar prob with mine. i bought a brand new 1.6 starter(efi) and it was still doing it. then i got a machined flywheel to suit the starter and it still did it. then i got a spacer for the starter and it still did it. then i took the starter back to suzisport and it was faulty so they swaped it over and it works fine now( no spacer needed with mine but some starters need it).

id say take the flywheel out and check the teeth on the stater fit and that there are 8 teeth. my old starter had 9 teeth and grinded a bit of the flywheel. if u doint know what u r doing take them both to grahm at suzisport springwood. he fixed mine.

1.3 starter.
the flywheel is brand new and the starter is brand new.
i had a plate from ben in new newzealand, i also grinded the side of the starter to make it fit and i still had problems, thats when i decided to get rid of the copnverstion plate and weld tabs on the gearfbox so that the starter would hit the flywheel correctly and not just skim it.

when i got my startermotor reconditioned it worked fine without noise and it would start up everytime without fail no noise nothing, within 3 weeks it started playing up making noise on startup and wouldnt start up, now i cant even turnover.

if the flywheel is brand new and the starter was brand new how can it stuff up within a month.

dodgy reconditioning. i had a brand new starter and was stuffed!
id say go to suzisport and tell them to put a new one in and if it works then buy it, its only $200 with grahm plus $20 for putting it in or u can put it in. point is try another starter.

well ill go see the bloke i got it done by and see what he says, he might put it under warrenty and do it again or somehting.

have you ground enough off the starter ? use grease and see if it still hits ...

Have you got a "clicky starter fix" relay in your zuk?

If not, try sticking one in, so that the key switches the relay and the relay powers the solenoid.
Its a really common problem on zuks, and usually just causes the starter to click, not turn, but sometimes they will grind instead.

Failing that, you need to try a 1.6 narrow body starter.

thanks for ya help, i am going to get a working starter motor and see how it all goes. hopefully it was just a dodgy starter.

if all fails where and how much is a 1.6 narrow starter?

maybe the hole problem is that i need a 1.6 starter instead of my 1.3 starter?

It's just a simple relay that any auto sparky can do for you. Shouldn't cost that much in parts, just the time i suppose.

Parts are about $10 - it's just a relay on the starter wire (black with a yellow trace) to ensure the starter solenoid gets 12V.

It helps the starter solenoid to pull in fully ensuring it engages.

Check the auto electrical forum, there will be information about how to wire a relay.
