the orginal colour of the oil when new was a blue colour and now its just dark blue/black. is it worth just putting new oil in it you reckon?
thanks

Definetly put new oil in it but it sounds like the damage has been done.
It might last but it will be forever noisy.
Put some decent diff breathers on while your doing it.

grease up your uni joints on the drive shafts
if that doesn't fix it . get a stethascope (spelling) and put it on the hubs, diff center ... i'll more accurately pin point the problem

see if you can wobble the drive shaft up and down or side to side, if the pinion bearings have given way, then the crown and pinion will no longer be meshing correctly, and that will make them noisy

Have also had strange noises after immersion with Hilux drums - mud and grit everywhere.....
