Hi all, this morning my TD42 Patrol had what seemed to be a flat battery for no reason - no lights left on or anything etc. Anyway I tried to jump start it but when I turned the key to start al that happened was some solenoids started clicking like crazy but no crank. So I roll started it and drove to work and when I turned it off tried to start it again, same problem - solenoids clicking but no crank. Any ideas anyone????????

if jumping it didn't work but rollstarting did and you can here the relay clicking I'd say it's the starter motor.

but if theres no lights either then its definatly a bettery or alternator problem aswell as a dead starter

the clicking is probably just the fact that the battery doesnt have enough charge to turn the starter... jump starting doesnt really work well on big diesels, have had the same problem with mine.. left a car hooked up to it running for 15-20min and still wouldnt start..

as to the flat battery in the first place.. just had the same problem.. diode pack in the alternator was shot, draining the battery, and not charging.. when you get it going next, put a multimeter on the battery and see if it's charging (ie, 13/13.5v) if not it is probably alternator related...

it worked out the same price to buy a new aftermarket alt from Auto Electrics Australia, as having the old one repaired... and it has a warrenty.

Part No for mine (early GQ with hitachi alt with the vacuum pump in the back) was ALT 7055

check all your earths in the engine bay ... onto the block of the motor and on the alt ...
