Guy's, I have an 89, petrol/gas, GQ. For the time I have owned it (4 years) it has run around a third on the temp gauge. Once after a long lowrange climb in summer it got to half. It always ran cooler than mates petrol GQ's. A couple of months ago the radiater cracked and I replaced it with a three core which at the time I thought was going to be heavy duty. Since then it runs at half to a bit over and on hot days gets up to three quarters. When hot it also gets hotter while idling. I have replaced the thermostat. It is not loosing coolant. I wonder if there is a four core radiater and that was what was in there previously or coinsidentantly the viscous coupling has shagged itself. Ideas please. Scott.

Get a compression test, I bet #6 is down on compression which could mean your gasket has blown out like mine did

this may sound dumb but have your got the fan cowl in there still, not having this will cause heat to go up considerably. Check your viscous first its obviously the cheaper alternative.

When i had a Dual Fuel mav i went to stockton beach with the old man and his Kia Sportage (yeah laugh all you want its not my 4x4 :) ) and while up there i smelt a bit of heat from the motor, looked down and it was just at the hot mark b4 the overheat mark, i knew there was something wrong and i wasn't pushing it on a cool day out there)

Well i got her home (freeway driving back to the Central Coast got her down the 1/3). Replaced the Water pump, Radiator with a 3 core, Fan blades and viscous clutch. new water lines all around (inc the heater ones). Took her back to stockton 1 week after all the work was done, 1/4 and never got past that ever again, not even in hot days with the A/C on,

I replaced everything so i can't tell you what it is but i can tell ya there is a fix

When my head cracked around the No.6 it never got any hotter either, head gasket may get hotter if it goes but not a cracked head

Buy a toyota radiator cap form a old 75 series, they are all metal and $15, for a genuine one they are the best.

Thanks for you help. I got a new radiater cap with the radiater. And all the shroud etc is still in place. I've had the carbon monoxide test done which was negative. So I think I'll change the coupling and see how it goes. Cheers, Scott.
