Can a K&N type pod filter replace a standard box filter and be used in conjunction with a snorkle???

You can get off the shelf drop in K&N filters to suit most factory airboxes. Is that the sort of thing you want?

Yea in a way. Just chasing more poke and I'm thinking making it breath better would be a good start (filter, extractors, pipes etc).

I run a K&N pod filter on road and swap my factory air box back (with standard paper filter) for off road dusty stuff. You could always do something like that.

Yes- a bit more power; it's most noticeable at high revs.

Extractors made a bigger difference, even with the standard exhaust hanging off the back. Of course results will vary from vehicle to vehicle.

Murcod, are you worried about your K&N fillin with crap off road? or crap gettin into your engine.. coz K&N filters are fully washable and have a million mile guarantee from memory...?

ive thought of this too.
get a pod filter, and a bit of 150mm dia PVC conduit. place over the pod filter, cap both ends off and have your snorkel plug into one capped off end and your intake pipe on the other end. get 1 end with a threaded cap on it so you can change the filter. (id put it at the intake end)

Crap getting into the engine- K&N's don't have a big capacity for filtering large amounts of dust; plus if you do a water crossing (and it doesn't have to be deep) an open pod filter can get wet. I crossed a fairly shallow creek but ended up with water sprayed everywhere in the engine bay courtesy of the viscous hub fan.

There are prefilter sleeves that fit over K&N's for use offroad, that would be the best option for anyone wanting to use one off road.

I'm not saying they're bad filters or anything like that- just probably not the best for offroad use. I've been using them for the last 15 years in various vehicles, but prefer paper filters off road.

Why not just get a drop in K&N for your factory airbox and a standard fit snorkel??!! It would be a lot easier and neater....

Chances are your factory airfilter would have a much greater surface area than a pod filter that fits inside 150mm diameter pipe too.

K@Ns ok for boy racer cars but seen them pass fine dust on a Proper 4wd.
Stick to OE filter (at least on Toyotas and Nissans.
Larger surface area and better filtering. IMO

I run a K&N Pod filter. Main problem with the open element thing is that it sucks in hot air when stopped at the lights etc and there's no airflow going into the engine bay, so what I did was get a tin of Nescafe which was perfect (almost) fit as an airbox and a tube coming out the other side.

In your case the tube could easily be hooked up to the snorkel.

While you're at it, getting some thermal insulation for the airbox helps quite a bit when you're driving slowly as the heat buildup in the bay won't be heating up your filter as much as it would otherwise.

Personally I'm quite happy and there's some legislation in Victoria saying oil-based filters are to be in sealed box, so, hey, yipee, it's legal too

Why not keep the K&N filter offroad & use a snorkel sock when needed if worried about dust ?
