well it has happend, i busted my crown wheel and pinion in my front diff.
so dose any one make a chromolly crown wheel and pinion for the front of an 80 and how much it will cost?
also seeing my front CVs are out i may as well change my diff gears to suit my 36s as well, so what ratio should i be going?

No chomo gears but you can get the crownwheel and pinions heat and cryo treated for better strength.

4.56 and an air locker, or something that it solid all round...then make up a spacer for the bearings and throw away the crush slieve. End result is a tough diff

I've never seen a set of chromo gears. But like stated above you can have them treated. From what Bobby Long tells me you can use both treatments on a trail rig only. But if you use it as a D.D. you will want only one treatment.

cool well ill have to look into it as it is my DD, dose it just make it a pig to drive if you have both treatments done, and a rough price on getting them done and whats the more effective.

Nah it just effects the wear rate.
When you heat treat the gears it makes them resistant to chipping but also slightly softens them making them wear more when driven daily.

best way to strengthen it is an air locker

the trend begins
air locker
longfield cvs
longfield hub gears
axles ( longfields or other )
heat treat the centre
and your away

ok the bearing spacer i can understand but what is the actual go with the locker strengthening the crown wheel and pinion?
how does it do that?

The air locker carrier is stronger than the OE carrier, therefore less chance of the crownwheel flexing away from the pinion.

If you look at a std centre, it has two large windows that reduce strength of the pinion...all the gears ive seen broken are right above where they are supported by air...(the holes)
Toyota have put 4 pinion open centres in the latest cruisers to make the centre solid and stronger...you should too.
The ARB is solid

but it's the same carrier just with an arb centre!!?? i always thought it was because the spider gears flogged out in the stock centre and caused the diff to explode. thats what happened to mine in it's pre locker days.

Terminology...
Centre = complete diff assembly as removed from axle housing (or 3rd member as the yanks call it)
Carrier = bit that carries the crownwheel, supported by 2 bearings, be it OE or ARB locker type

the locker is an upgrade but isnt the be all and end all, i have heard of guys upgrading to a GU front centre in the hybrid axle?!

ahhh, i have always thought the carrier was the housing!!!
