Post by big lux »

im looking at fitting hydro steer to my lux just wondering if anyone knows if the standard v6 power steer pump will have enough pressure/flow to run this system. i know about the rulz with hydro steer on the street so im just going to make up a quick connect / reconect steering arm if this works

Im fitting hydro assist to mine aswell. 3RZ motor kept blowing the standard pump without hydro so have gone to a boosted ford XF pump. Will see how it goes.

I run hydro on my lux and still running the standard 2.8 diesel power steer pump.
It seems to handle it alright but I am going to fit a vs dunnydore pump soon. Dont forget to run a cooler as the fluid gets farken hot.
cheers Dan

nissan's work on the exact same principle, spend 20min to learn the basic principles of operation, and this can be applied to almost any brand box!!!

Are you talking full hydro steer or assist steer

my recommendation is assist steer if your worried about the rulz.

Just trying to find out if the early GQ steering box are up to it or if you need a later bigger box. Also do the pumps need a restrictor opened up like the Toyota pump or is the output enough for a 1.5" ram in standard trim?

what i was thinking was run it as assist on the road and have a quick disconect for the steer arm when off road so as to get full flex. might try and run it off a ifs box

WTF :?:

Why disconnect for off-road? That is when you need the hydro assist the most.

Are you talking about converting to:
1 basic power steering
2 hydraulic ram assist where you have your normal power steering with an additional single ended ram to assist your drag link with turning the wheels
or
3 full hydraulic steering that has a double ended ram as your only means of turning the wheels?

None of these should limit your flex as 2 and 3 have the ram mounted on the diff.

You can not make Hydro assist work as Full Hydro by just removing the steering arm from the steering box.

I can! ;)

but not recommended as the powerhead cc displacement is too small for use as a direct orbital valve.

Ok i should have said. Its not as simple as removing the steering arm from the steering box to turn Hydro Assist into Full Hydro.

i wasnt talking about disconecting the hydro a ment the steering arm. i was thinking a single acting ram with a taped box and a rebiuld power steer pump on the v6 with a heavier releaf valve spring
