Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Hi Guys,

Im looking at buying a Sierra / Vitara. What is the general opinion?

What is the best option for a general work run about and a little bit of 4wding on the weekends?

Please read and research and ask SPECIFIC questions. It's unfair to expect boardmembers responses to questions that have been discussed before many times.

It's easy to write vitaras are better on road and sierras are better off road, but you already knew that didn't you?

Yes but we don't know anything about you and what you want to do with the car. It's impossible to answer this question in a meaningful way, except to explain the obvious - a vitara is better on road, has more power, is more comfortable, a sierra is cheaper, cheaper to work on, and is better off road.

I could say the best car for you is a 1982 1.0 trayback sierra or a 2007 GV based on the information you have given us.

so you had a read through both the Sierra and Vitara bibles as well? You have had a bit of a look through any build ups and members threads. Done a bit of a read through the Suzuki forum in general?

Give us some more details on what you want to do with it, how much you want to spend, intentions of mods?, etc. There is a wealth of infomation here, may just take a bit of searching to find what you want.

I did expect it, im a veteran on alot of other forums, i am just surpised at how hard it is to get the simple information that Gwagensteve gave in his second post. Anyway...

The car is at first going to be a cheap "get me to work and back" car, which i will rebuild it's motor and give the suspension and everything a general freshen up to make it reliable as possible. In the future, i will look at going the whole hog with suspension, lights, bar work, big tyres, etc and getting into some 4WDing. I have a brand new XR6 Turbo in the Garage, so i have the speed toy, now i want a 'Bash throught the bush/sand/mud toy' that i can launch off a cliff, roll back on it's wheels and away we go for the next adventure

Still looking to find one, looking at a soft top but would go for a good hard top if the deal was good. Engine condition doesnt matter as i will rebuild it, but no rust would be nice. Looking to get one for under $2500 initial purchase price if i can...

so armed with this new detailed info a Sierra is going to be the better choice if the final direction is going to be using it as a 4wd. Ideally look for a 1988 and up model which are wide tracks. The extra width of the diffs plus the addition of a 1.3 engine make them the more desirable Sierra to buy.

Be warned a Sierra is not the most comfortable on road car, they never will be due to the swb. the Vitara will be somewhat more comfortable with a better car like build. Sierras are very basic cars and as such can be a bit of a shock to those who are used to driving normal passenger cars with their noise, basic feel and ride. But they are fun

haha, no its not really. One of my mates had an 84 model with a 4sp for a while, and it was OK for what it was other than the fact it did some monstrous revs trying to keep up at 100! Hopefully the 5 sp goes some way to fixing this...

Besides, driving this all week will make me appreciate my XR6T a bit more

You won't know yourself!!

The 5 speeds pull 100 no worries, although they still slow down on hills.

Please don't paint us as the bad guys, ^^^^^ THATS the information we needed to give you sound advice. if you'd posted that as your first post you wouldn't have been flamed at all, because there are specific parameters here that narrow it down.

You need an 88-96 sierra. Should come in on your budget, but will need some work to be reliable. A Vitara will not be as well suited as they aren't as happy being given heaps in the bush.

Ease up Steve, it wasnt me who called you Nazis. I asked a general question, in search of a general answer, which you gave me after getting on your high horse.

Next time instead of making yourself look like the bad guy, give a general answer and flame them when they complain about it being general.

go to the general forum and ask whats better out of 6 different 4wds and the people that own one will say its the best, same with vits and Sierras

I would go with whatever seems to be cheap around you and what the local wreckers have te most stock of parts for

I have owned both, modded both and driven both through tracks that pushed both as far as the size of them can do and I dont think there is a lot in it until you get into massive tires and custom suspension and so on

does anyone know the revs for the 1.0L and 1.3L at 100 km's? Iv'e owned both and didn't think there was that much in it.

kryzak, I'm running both a sierra and vitara, both mine get identical economy, obviously the vitara is more comfortable, it performs great in the sand and I actually spend more time driving it, but I love the bare bones and reliability of the sierra, horses for courses eh.

for a 1.0 litre I get 4739 or 5104 depending on whether it has 15's (26" tall) or 16's (28" tall) on it.

A 1.3 5 speed sierra pulls about 3300-3500 depending on year and spec.

That's at exactly 100 kph
