i started out with a 253 in my hilux and after blowing it up i got it rebuilt, put a few doll hairs into it to and now that ive upgraded to a 308 thows parts are going to waste. i want to put the stage 2 gas power cam and the timing chain on the 308 but dose it fit??? seems like a shame as there both only bout 1000k old.

i may not be no help but i thought that 253 and 308 where all the same just bore and stroke was different. and 253 run a 2barrel carb and 308 ran a 4 barrel

yeah mate they go straight in... not the best idea puttin a used cam in a new/diffrent motor though.
always better to run a new cam because the old one is worn (naturally) and has been run in and working with the clearances etc of the previous motor. therefore it will not run at its peak performance. (can sometimes have big problems)
no doubt it will work but its just a general rule of thumb... ask any engine builder

also another general rule is when you change cams ALWAYS fit a new chain and dont use 2nd hand/used lifters

and yeah the 253 an 308 are virtually the same motors, just a diffrent stroke, same as the small block chevs. everything fits...

just re-read your post... if you blew it up i wouldnt be usin the cam anyway... could be twisted etc.

just get a new one mate, they not expensive.

ive found vpw (victorian performance warehouse) in melbourne are the best to deal with. cheapest on most things aswell!

Different Bore same Stroke. Otherwise i agrea with everything else you said.

253 / Bore- 92.08mm Stroke- 77.77mm
308 / Bore- 101.60mm Stroke - 77.77mm

Although the 304 is different in both Bore and Stroke. Bore is still 101.60 but stroke is only 76.86mm.

As stated above....... its all the same bar for the mentioned items

The advice on useing a USED cam/cam chain/lifters is correct.

and the only other drawbacks are some cams that are designed to work in a 253 wont play well in the 308 & vice versa
( NB: NOT ALL CAMS ARE LIKE THIS )
The higher performance cams for the 308 will hate the 253 with a pashion.
The low end gas cams for a 253 will make the 308 perform poorly. ( may aswell fit a 253 type performance !!! )

A good combination of heads, inlet manifold, & extractors is really all thats needed for a spirited performer in either the 253 or 308.

Different bore same stroke yes but different crank, counterweights make swapping very difficult requiring a fancy balance job with mallory metal.

Everthing else interchanges. 253 had little rods, later 308's had better, larger rods

Thanks Joel i knew the crank was different and not easily interchangable but couldnt remember why.

And the later rods are commonly refered to as X rods.

this is correct 253s and 308 use different cam profiles and they dont run very well if swapped infact as kingy says a high performance 308 cam will barely run in a 253 . 55 cubic inchs makes all the difference
