Outer Limits 4x4 Board

ive got a 86 dual cab lux with 2.4lt diesel, i want to run 35in tyres and ive been told to change gears. what i want to know is why?? what will happen if i run 35s with std diffs, gearing,etc. i know a guy with 95 single cab lux with 2.8lt diesel, stock engine (non turbo), stock diffs, transfer case and gears, 2in body and 2in springs and running 35s. he says all he can notice is the speedo is out but apart from that, he says its been going fine with no probs for at least 3yrs. is there any difference in the gearing/diffs of a 2.4lt 86 and a 2.8lt 95. is there any other reasons apart from the speedo being out?? i appreciate any help

Mate i got an 86 2.4 petrol with standard gears and diffs and running 33's. Hardly noticed the difference at all. so doubt that it would make that much difference as well apart from scrubbing on the gaurds with the fronts.

petrol and deisel diffs are different ratios all you will notice is less power off the line and lower criusing rpm give it a go and iff it anoys you get sum diff centers out of a petrol witch are 4.88 ratio i run this ratio on 35s and works well or put some redution gears in the tranfer.

You will need 4.88s, low range will run away from you in the bush, plus you will have a lot more control when you take the steep stuff on.
Picking up a pair will be much cheaper than transfer gears.

thanks everyone, where would i get 4.8s from? lux or 4runner?? what year model?? if i get 35s and run them on stock gearing for a while until i get my hands on 4.8s am i going to do any damage to running gear?? do i need to replace both front and rear centres?? again, thanks for the help all. really appreciate it cos the only way ill learn anything is to ask dumb questions.

Yeah man if you plan on keeping it best bet buy new ones and get them set up properly, If not just keep an eye on the for sale section on here and you'll end up getting some 2nd hand ones. If you plan on running them on the road check with department of transoprt for your state, What you can and can't do legally, So you don't do all this only to drive it on the road for a week or 2 and then be defected and spend more $ to fix it so you can get to work. Drove my 2.8 from just outside of kilcoy to landcruiser park on the weekend on 35's 4.3 diffs with non turbo 2.8 pushing it with gear on it and it went ok.
