4.8l GU TI automatic gearbox - how strong?

my mate is looking at buying a GU TI with a 5l commodore motor with the TI 4.8l autobox behind it - the guy who is selling it had a 383 in it and kept blowing the box - 3 times i think.
it now has the 185kw 5l in it and he says the box has been strengthened - valves, bands etc.
My question is how strong can you make the auto box that comes with the 4.8l? WIll my mate have problems with the strengthened box with the 5l?
Oh and the guy is asking for 20k with 5l/37s/lift/immaculate TI interior.
cheers!

Doesn't the 4.8 Litre Patrol make 180kw?
I would have thought he Nissan transmission had been designed to handle this sort of power????

the 4.8 box can handle 200kw and over 400NM. It used to make this power in other markets with less restrictive emissions laws.
They actually dropped its output here a couple of KW and NM for the latest wave of emissions laws to hit us.
It was originally from the big Infiniti Q45 in the USA - so it can cope with a nissan dohc 4.5L V8 which you can bet can cope with a shiteload more power than an old school low revving holden 5L.
Easy way to tell if its a 4.5L or 4.8L auto box.
All 4.5L are 4 speeds (4th is overdrive). All 4.8L box are 5 speed (5th is overdrive) - all 4.8L auto box also have a tiptronic style shift option. it was pretty crap like most tiptronics though

Auto boxes are usually designed to handle a certain torque amount, not power (ie, kw). If it genuinely had a 383 stroker in it, that may very well have had a shit load more torque than that box was designed to handle.
That said, I would be surprised if it couldn't handle a lot more than standard. It would be the first I've heard of giving up like.

The VH45 is no slug in the torque dept .. makes around 450Nm. and from what I have read the RE4R03A is a pretty durable box and the 5 speed is stronger again (with some tweaks it is very tough indeed) handling turbo'd VK45's ..
I am sure the 383 is not short Nm's most seem to be about 500-550 range ( Ok so thats a fair bit more than 450

)

They have done well, most places I spoke to couldnt get the 4.8 auto to work with Chev V8's, Other model Nissans(gq, gu etc)... some have, but very few. I'd suspect it aint the box he thinks.

I have heard quite a bit about the truck - Specifically he wanted to keep the gearbox as is to keep it all stock apart from motor. He blew the box about 3 times.
I will find out if it is the 5sp auto for sure and post back!
Cheers for the replys guys.

A GUI or II Ti which had the 4.5L originally could easily be an honest purchase for $20,000.
GOod condition examples with 150,000km sell for as low as $18,000 here in QLD.
Noone wants them. The 4.5L is reliable but its crap to drive and ridiculously thirsty which is why they can be had soooo cheap.

i would also bet it was the torque convertor not being right for the motor n boiling the trans fluid
verry common with v8 swaps n nissans

Andrew at Ontrack is supposedly putting the 4.8auto behind his 4.8lt turbo motor. Heard it could win some pissing contests with its power and torque. So will be interesting to see how his auto holds up. But it has been fully rebuilt (or atleast being done).

i can second that andrewis putting an auto behinde his motor, not that i was told which one but i was told that the auto was going in when i was in the shop about 4 weeks ago. was told that it blew the gearbox on the highway.
another note to that i saw it a few week b4 i went in to talk with the guys there, and it absolutly took off like a rocket.
suposdly 400kw,
