hi
My friend has a 2003 gu 3 ltr with about 120 000kms and the turbo makes a squelling noise like a belt
is slipping when the turbo kicks in at about 1500 rpm . Anyone got any ideas as what it could be??
cheers

are you sure its from the turbo?
belt tensioner pulley bearing is a common problem.
if it is from the turbo i would get it fixed quick.

We are starting to see a few alternators cause this problem, but the worn out belt tensioner is common as, Cheers Phill.

Yes probably is belt tensioner but is he certain it is a squealing noise and nos a high pitch whistling noise cause this could be something as simple as a boost leak

check the 3 nuts n studs on dump pipe, one of mine is stripped and it now makes the noise exactly as your describing.mine's made the noise which is quite loud for over 5000k,hasn't hurt it at all.

You really should fix it.
Just because nothing has gone wrong yet doesn't mean it isnt slowly killing itself.

Drop the belt off to prove a point. If its still there then its not a belt or tensioner problem. Exhaust leaks can cause a squeel as well. Can be hard to find, we use a smoke machine to find these.

Another thing which causes a scream when it comes onto boost is a leak in the EGR system which is really common.
The bolts literally fall out!

just thought I'd chime in... my squealed for a little while, then it went away... I did change the oil though... but wouldn't worry about it... when it blows up, panic other than that keep it krankin'... and I'm serious, i can never find problems... I let them fix themselves, with minor servicing from me, never had problems...

They squeal when they overboost, its common when the variable vane mechanism becomes sticky, it is often associated with a surge under power as the boost spikes and drops due to the sicking vanes.

You will find that the EGR pipe on the drivers side behind the fuel pump will be missing the top bolt or loose and the noise is the gasket vibrating just like the noise you get when you blow on a gum leaf held in your hand.
We have seen heaps of people replace turbos when it was the gasket. You will see and aluminium pipe running from the side of the inlet manifold down to the EGR controller on the outer part of the engine follow it down and it will be the inside top bolt missing or loose.
Dont just tighten it up,the flange will be bent,it needs facing, the holes drilled out one size larger and new gaskets fitted.
Good luck.
