Outer Limits 4x4 Board

hi all bit of a problem with my 91 hilux 2.8d its got 300 thou on the clock thought the engine was healthy so got the local turbo shop to put a turbo from a surf on, that was a week ago it was goin beaut until this morning went to start it ,took a few cranks and died ,so started it again and it started but stuggled to idle blew a whole lot of white smoke and just wanted to die making quiet a lound knocking sound also i checked if there was water in the oil but nothing any help would be great.

This sounds like a timing belt issue.

Usually white smoke is a sign of timing problem - not enough fuel at time of compression induced combustion.

Timing belt may have slipped a tooth or 3. Clunking noise could be timing rattle or valves hitting pistons.

could be something unrelated to the turbo ie blocked fuel filter. easy thing to to check.
otherwise check cam belt (slipped a tooth or two) and then compression check.
tho its a little odd to do it over night. i wonder if its got a small leak in the injector pump, over night fuel can drain back to the tank and suck air into the pump. pump up the primer pump on top of the filter, if it takes a while to go hard its problerly got a leaky seal. your vechile is of the age of the ones that are prone to injector seal failure due to the new low sulphur deisel.

Just a thought also maybe check to see how much power you have at the glow plugs maybe let it glow a few times and try start it. Having just had the turbo fitted i'd take it back to them and let them look at it.
Hopefully sloshy will explain how to get them going without glow plugs in the morning

At a guess, seals gone in turbo.

White smoke = unburnt fuel.

I'd guess that you don't have enough compression in one or more cylinders to ignite the fuel/air mix, and the clunking sound makes me think cracked piston.

When the turbo was installed ... was it properly tuned ?
Do you have a pyro ?

the turbo was fitted last week the guys said it didnt have to be tuned straight away, i rang them up today they seem to think its got somthing with a seal in the injector pump or somthing its going back to them tomorrow any way
