80 series gearbox

Bought an 80 series DX reciently with a 1HZ and 5 speed gearbox. The box won't shift back to 2nd from 3rd unless giong REALLY slow and i want to fix it. What are my options? I have been told that the GXL box's are different cause of constant 4wd. Is this true? Will a HJ75 Ute or troopy box bolt up the same or do i need DX 80 series specific?

Cheers!

I'm in much the same boat with my 91 gxl but i think mine is a lil worse than yours sounds  Around up here (Townsville) i have been quoted $2500 for an exchanged reco box. I had the same idea with using a ute or troopy box as i have been told that they have single syncro box and they don't have the probs like the double syncro 80series boxes do. Is it worth looking into or am i better to just pay the $2500 for a reco box?

PS Sorry for hijacking your thread

I will add a

+1

and a +1 for a guy at work.

We both changed to it and the gear box is a lot smoother now.

change the oil before you shell out $2.5 large!!

I was almost ready to do a rebuild 18months ago. changed the oil as last resort and have been amazed at the difference. Im going to refresh the oil this weekend, 1st oil change after doing about 30,000k since I changed to the Castrol oil.
It took a couple of weeks driving for the Castrol oil to work right through the box and loosen everything up. Has been all good since then. Other people have recommended changing the Castrol gearoil every 10k. Im not quite that fanatical.

$30 bucks for oil vs $2500 for rebuild? hmmm. . . . I know what Id do first.

The M part of the VMX-M is widely touted as being a special formulation made up for a problem Mitsubishi had with their boxes. Lucky thing is that it is also great on 80 series boxes.

cheers

Silly question, got the same problem with my 80 series box (to a much lessor extent)... Not entirely sure how to go about changing the oil... where is the drain plug located? Where is the filler located?

Cheers,
Dean

Castrol VMX-M 75w80
I was at Super Heap the other day and they had

Castrol
VMX - Manual
80

Is this the right stuff? (As per castrol recommendations it is)

But I wanted to make doubly certain that there is not another type called 75w80 or something!?!?

Nah mate it is VMX-M 75W85 as stated above. I changed the oil and it does make a big difference to the box much lighter and smoother when it is cold but when mine heats up abit the ugly gear clash still pops its head up.

As above. checked the bottle in the shed ;)

the M on the end is important. VMX-M was developed to fix problems with lube in Mitsibishi sp? (bittsashitty) gearbox, hence the "M"

I mistakenly picked up the VMX 80 last night, got the VMX-M today... The oil rating is not listed on the VMX 80, can it be used in anything (GQ or 4runner maybe?)

Are the gearboxes all the same in 80`s, ie Turbo and non the same? My Turbo 80 box is a bit average on the 1-2 shift when cold, if it is the same will change to this oil and see if it helps

Different ratios in first and second, maybe reverse too.
However they are all constructed the same and will all benefit from VMX-M

Yep. Been using the castrol VMX-M in the gear box. Done about 3,000 klms since changing and very satisified. After it wore it self through properly i really noticed the difference. I'll drop it out at 10'000 and replace with fresh VMX-M.

VMX-M is the stuff, makes it quieter and shift nicer too than heavier oils
