mines still going been told by a auto trans shop that they are a tough box just service it regularly like every second service (if you service yours every 5 thousand) drop the pan and change the trans oil also check the condition of the filter if its blocked change it mine was blocked and i lost all drive changed it and it was fine
and make sure you use dexron 3 trans fluid or if you use genuine toyota stuff use type 4 trans fluid
i was told by a supposedly trans guru to use btr oil which is the equivilent (sp) to the 95le oil used in the ford 4 speeds had nothign but drams it used to shudder blocked my filter and blocked up the governor so it would hold the gears until it warmed up put dex3 back into it abwsolutely beautiful

here is a great site for info on auto transmissions, they specialize in 4x4 stuff also. If you have a question, they have an page "ask orto" and will advise what you need.

from what I have read the A440 is a pretty damn tuff transmission, however there are a few tip/tricks that can make it even more bullet proof.

Had one in our 60series that had done 650,000km before the car was written off in an accident. Still was changing fine and was used as a regular tow vehicle and offroad.
Just keep up the servicing and it should outlast the car itself.
