80 series sub tank not changing over

i have an 80 series and the sub tank is not changing over from the main tank what could be the cause and i have pulled the switch apart and it seems to be fine

What engine type - Diesel or Petrol???
They both have very different systems.

its a 90 model diesel

The changeover solenoids are located on the body just behind the cross member which is basically above the rear axle, and off centre to the left. There are two solenoids - one for forward fuel and the other for return.
Climb under there and feel for action on both solenoids as someone else activates the sub switch on/off/on/off.
They can physically jam from crap in the fuel or lack of use. Also electrical problems can occur - look for 12VDC on each solenoid when sub is selected.
There is a vulnerable wiring point where the cable exits the body floor pan just in front of the left hand rear wheel arch. It then heads straight toward the changeover solenoids. I have had stick damage bust a couple of wires there before.
