Hi,

Just finished up putting my commo motor in with the VN sump on it as advised by marks and it looks like i am going to have some clearance issues with tie rod and sump.

I have the IFS box and i have both the 4 runner and landcruiser pitman arms and they both look like they will cause the tie rod to hit the sump.

I know that i will need to assemble it all and flex it up before i can really tell what she'll do but just wanted to see if anyone out there has encountered this problem and what they did to fix it.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Dave

So is this a solid axle jobby with IFS steering box?

Yeah mate.

Solid Axle up front.
2" Dropped Front Hangers.
Rears up front.
Using IFS steering box, and 4-runner pitman arm,
connected to a steering rod that runs UNDER the sump,
and connects to crossover steer with double arm on the LEFT side
as per usual.

Question is, this steering rod is REAL close to the sump at rest,
is it gonna clear when flexed up is what Dawgo wants to know

Cheers,
Bart

is it going to hit the bottom of the sump or the front?

It looks like it will hit the bottom of the sump.

I changed the sump to the steel one as per marks adaptors instructions from the alloy one it had on there in the first place. They looked exactly the same to me.

I am sure i could get something made up but just wanted to see if anyone has gone through this before me.

Cheers for info.

I modified the steel sump to miss the steering on my IFS, basically moved the pan in front of the relay rod and then dropped it down.
Then modified the pick up.

It's a pretty substantial remodelling of the sump and took me a day and a half because sump steel is absolute crud to weld.

G'day, I too have been through this with my lux. I ended up fabbing up a complete new reverse pick-up sump and modded pick-up. The only part of the original sump that was used is the flange. It now has the main part sitting at the back of the engine but still allowing about 150mm between the bottom of the sump and the top of the diff. Now has plenty of clearence for the rock rods. Works out to be about 6ltr capacity. Also had to modify the Marks chassis bracket to miss the rods too. Fair amount of stuffing a round actually but a hell of alot cheaper than the bought ones though. Just make sure you use a TIG to weld the sump as you will be guaranteed to get oil leaks if a MIG is used, good idea to weld both sides of the seams too.

Well i have been doing some measuring and checking some clearances and
what not and i have encountered another issue.

I also have duals in this truck and if i lift the engine mount up the 2 inches that i need to for it to clear the cross over i am going to have a wicked angle on the auto transmission. It already has a slight angle now which i think is too much as the front transfer mount does not even touch the cross member.

If i lift the transmission up (probably wont need 2 inches out of it) even an inch my output shaft on rear transfer will hit the horse collar in a big way.

So i think i am going to need to move the horse collar back approx 5 cms as well. Has anyone done this before?

Is there anyone out there with a V6 commodore motor in a LFS 4 runner with crossover and duals. If so i really need some info as this is beginning to pee me off.

Thanks for help.

Cheers

Buy or make a reverse sump to clear the cross over arms.
Some crossover arms put the rods up high so they will hit the sump, what arms are you running?

G'day I have about 170mm from the bottom of the sump to the top of the diff. About 120mm from the top of the rock rod to the bottom of the sump and about 100mm clearence for the rock rod to the modded engine mount.

Hey luxembuger how do your front springs sit with the weigh of the v6?
I had to go to a 6 -7 leaf pack, as they kept going negative arch.

Sump turned out good.

Looks like you have a 60s pitman arm too?

Cheers Matt, yeah pretty happy with how it turned out. Solved the factory oil leak from the commo sump plug by using one out of a diff housing i had sittin around! The springs seem to holding up fairly well, i reckon the v6 is about the same weight as the 2.8 but the dyna box a bit heavier than the standard. The springs are a 5in Skyjacker and are ok but will go for some custom packs when it's time to replace.
The pitman arm is a snake racing one, I think they make their own?!
