I have searched and searched this and other forums but I still dont under stand the following. I am changing my OEM 40 power steer to 60 series I have the 60 stuff and 75 tierods but i am confused on the actual steering column mods. From what I have read i need to source a 55 column but would like to see in more detail whats required. I also have a 60 column if its any use and i dont want to have to cut and shunt a column together.

hey BJ,
from what I understand...
the 55 column/shaft replaces the 40 one with a splined end instead of the 40 end which has the rag joint.
from the 55 colum you can use a hilux steering uni (scotto did this) or a 80+hilux uni (toohey did this) to join to a 75 or MWB intermediate shaft.
this then connects to the steering box on the chassis.
I believe Ray (on here) has managed to graft a 60 series column in (with tilt adjust) but it wasn't as straight forward as the 55 steering column. scotto and ray have used a MWB intermediate shaft were toohey has used a 75. As long as its collapsible it should be suitable.
hope this makes things a bit clearer..

I think (not sure) that MWB and 75 series colapsable intermediate shafts are the same animal? In either case like Andy said I used a middy shaft but had to shorten it a little to suit the 60 column. All that means is that I cut down the male part of the colapsable shaft to reduce its length when assembled. The 60 column isnt the prettiest thing in the world as it sits out from the dash a bit further than the original (this could probably be fixed but I have better things to do) but its handy having the tilt adjust and all the wiper/light controls on the column rather than the dash.

i looked at using a 55 column but decided that since the 40 series column was only going to be turned into junk & seeing that i allready had it anyhow , i modified it instead , ended up cutting the shaft off about 50 mm from the end of the outter tube flange , making a brass bush to fit inside the tube to support the shaft , and cutting a spline into the shaft to take a 75 series intermediate shaft & universal.
All turned out very neat ... steering wheel still sits in standard position
