Hi, i am new to the ownership of a Zuk by i am glad i have one!!!
I am just trying to find out some easy mods that will get me some more 4wding benefits?
I am looking for easy mods with great benefits for 4wding like; More tyre clearance, more flexibility and ride height etc?
I have just got my Zuk and want to know some easy mods that will benefit me in 4wding?
Any help is much appreciated and will be taking under advisement!
Thankyou all

Fit a 2in body lift and a set of small mud terrain tyres. Then learn to wheel the piss out of it and have a lot of fun doing it

remove front sway bar
make up sliders
fit bigger tyres eg 215r 15 or 235s
lock rear diff
get some recovery gear, nothin worse than finding someone stuck and need to use your own gear to help them
than just wheel the f%*k out of it

Gears
Weld back diff
2" BL
31's
very very hard to actually better this - after this point it's diminishing returns- i.e the effort required for improvements gets big.

Liked mine the most on 29's locked front and rear! There was always a challenge there!

And cheap to do!
Extended shackles, 29's-30's, locked rear and hit the tracks!
EVERY ONE WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT ANSWER TO THIS!
And you'll get bitten by the bug and mod it more!

Thanks guys for your speedy replies,
I was thinking about extending shackles cause it seems easy and quick.
Bigger tyres are a big possibility but i want to try and stay on the stock rims so not having to find some F100 rims around.
Also was going to take out swaybar anyway but i am not sure if its Illegal in West Aus.
Edit: ok i n just found out that it is illegal and i would do it but i get my P plates in 3 months so dont want to lose them (LOL).
Also so what do you guys mean by "Lock the Diff and Weld The Diff" cause i am new to this and dont know exactly what it all means??
Anymore help is appreciated.

Yes thanks bazooked but have been through most of the bible and all i really came up with is how to get a cheap 2" lift kit

and some more confusion like; Do all Sierra's have springs or just shocks? which is really confusing to me and now my head hurts and i am tired lol.
But yes thanks anyway but i am probably going to go with the VS Shocks up front and Hilux Shocks in back for 2" of lift. but now i am confused more about weather ill need new springs if i got leaf springs?!?!?!?! which i doubt it but still confused

by spamwell
if you want suspention lift you will need lifted springs
Posted: Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:29 pm
by Camdaman12
Yes i gathered that but but what kind of springs?
Like Coil or Leaf ?
And by what your saying i have to get new Springs and new shockies. Right?!?
Posted: Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:32 pm
by Big D
u have leaf springs
Posted: Mon Jan 28, 2008 6:36 pm
by Camdaman12
SO in that case i will have to buy new leaf Springs? and new Shockies to get the 2 inch lift?
is that what you guys are saying?
cause if thats the case thats no really problem but just hoping the new springs aren't to pricey.

by 11_evl
at this stage u dont need new LEAF springs or shocks, altho if u have or find some of the vs and hilux ones than yes by all means put them in.
just remove your sway bar, it doesnt make a squat of difference to onroad handling but lots off road and the cops would be none the wiser
as for the welded diff, dont stress about that rite now. its basically making both your rear wheels turn at the same speed whether one is in the air or not.
keep reading thru the crap and you will pick most of it up fairly quickly, go out and learn the car

yeah i got a pritty good understanding of most of it.
But i just want so cheap adn easy mods that give great benefits, like removing the swaybar and the dif locking i can do because dads a welder on the mines so he will do it for me lol.
but for now i am just trying to get some more offroad capabilities out of my Zuk for now. and plus i am removing back seat and adding in some custom storage space for my water tank adn camping stove adn stuff and plus i need rome for all my other gear lol.
But dont worry i was just thinking about the 2" lift as an idea for furture usage.
Thanks man for the help.

Right now, your car is more capable than you could possibly imagine. Really, it is. a 2" suspension lift or longer shackles do not, ever, ever, make your car more capable. It might make it more comfortable, more versatile, or look better, but it doesn't add any useful capability on its own.
There are only three ways to add capability to a car, and are best added in this order, but are often interrelated.
1) Increase traction by locking diffs and tyre tread pattern - . This can be free (by welding them up so both wheels turn together all the time) almost free (a USD$109 mini spool from trail tough) right through to really expensive - a $1800 air locker (full retail, fitted) obviously, a more aggressive tyre will provide more "bite" to keep the car moving
2) increase clearance with a taller tyre. Getting hung up on the diffs is the #1 cause of stopping the car. The taller the tyre, the further the diffs are off the ground, the less you get stuck. SUSPENSION LIFT DOES NOT INCREASE GROUND CLEARANCE ONLY BIGGER TYRES DO. Although suspension lift can, with bumpstop spacers, allow a larger tyre to be fitted. A 2" body lift will allow a 31" tyre -plenty for a sierra.
3)slow the car down with gearing. A car that racing and bouncing everywhere will end up stuck/rolled/anywhere but where you wanted it. Slowing the car down with transfer case gears allows you more time to pick a line and allows more torque to go to the wheels.
and:
You need to read read read read read.
Gears, selectable and automatic lockers, body lifts and small suspension lifts are legal.
Tyres over about 28", welded diffs, spools etc are not.
You also need diff breathers or you will trash your car.
Search is your friend.

He got off lightly

There is evidence of searching (the grave dig) , so I think the force is strong in this one.

Cmon Steve, the most important thing to make a car more capable is the driver. And I think this poor zook has some ruff times infront on it.

Thanks guys for all your help.
And i think they way i have been wording my posts has made it seem worse them it is. LOL
And i was looking at the lockers mainly the Free ones, but! Now that Steve told me about the mini spool lockers from trail though ill look into them. But do i put them just on the rear diff or on both?
Also i have been doing some reading on Mini Spolls and many people seem to say that they rip up your tyres on the road really bad and slide real bad on wet roads and both of those are problem where i live cause i like the mud, and when its mud it is really, really wet adn plus all our trails like many people are a fair distance away from my house so dont want to be doing alot of driving on roads with them if they are going to rip my tyres right down? But if you guys haven't had any problems them i guess i am going to be buying dsome mini spools then
I am also looking for 215/70 tyres on the stock rims to lift the running gear but i was mainly looking at the 2" lift to i could fit 31's in but if i am staying without lift i think ill go with the 30's unless anyone else has a better idea?.
Also with the transfer case gears what do i change them with? Like can i just swap it with another model 4wd (like the cheap shockie idea) or do i have to buy some new ones??
Also its cool i am a noob so its cool i am not used to all this modding talk yet.

Cam,
learn how to drive it first. then u find out what stopped or got u bogged. mod from there to suit your terrain.
Mud is also different everywhere, clay, black mud etc.
then u can search before asking million questions.

OK will do but i also like doing my research on stuff like lockers and transfer cases and such just cause there is nothing else to do some nights beside reading post on here and i have driven my Zuk but not some hardcore stuff just mainly some such and simple 4wding about it and goes well just looking and asking around for mods and stuff that can be done to it. And i have learnt alot about it stuff that can be done.
But thanks all for your help especially Steve and Nicbeer you two have been very helpful to me
Thanks

First thing youve got to do, is take it out on the trails bog stock with someone who is willing to recover you if you get stuck, and drive the hell outta it, you will be suprised where a stock zook on 26" highway terrains will go. Learn the zooks limits and how it behaves, then start modding to suit. Too many people put lockers front and rear, big tyres etc into theyre newly aquired rig who dont have any experience, then roll theyre rig and injure themselves as its too capable for theyre level of experience. You will easily roll if youre not careful on a twin locked zook, and you do not want to roll in a zook more than most other 4wd's.
As far as my input for most worthwhile mods:
2" bodylift
31" tyres
2" suspension lift
Rear locker
Rockcrawler transfer gears (best single mod i reckon, but cost about $1000 not fitted)

Yeah I will PJ,zook and plus my mate i always go 4wding with has a 1989 V6 Pajero so i am sure he can get me out if i need him

and yes i will mod to suit my surround because at the moment i live in York about 1 hour away from Perth, and i still want to be able to get from here to Perth no problems but on weekends be able to go 4wding with no problems.
Thank You

cam - a 215/75r15 fits well on a stock zuk with no lift and is a big enough increase on stock to get you by - although i wouldnt recommend staying on stock rims if you're going larger than that - get some 15x7 speedy desert rat rims - theyre $50-60ea brand new and will give you some more track width too.
As for modding - i agree with the others - drive it stock and learn it, then do one mod at a time so you can fully appreciate each one and make the correct decision as to what you upgrade next.
Remember though - the more things you modify/change the more things you're going to break... a good example is upping the tyre size vs. snapping CV joints... everything is a trade off.
Where will you be doing most of your offroad???

dude i really think u should drive the car how it is 4 a start. u said u new to this and by doin all these mods without knowing how to drive u and gunna get urself into all types of shit off road and end up flipin it on its lid or some shit. my advice is drive it as it is and have fun doin it coz they are great offroad stock anyway and wen ur drivin caperbillities outmatch the car inprove it with the mods ur talkin bout. go step by step becauce i persnally think u will come unstuck if u jump in like u r

I don't think there's anything wrong with doing a few mods straight up. Correctly researched (like what this bloke is doing here, simply researching), a few mods can make a world of difference to a vehicle.
However the guys are right, Sierras are ridiculously capable things in stock form. So far the only mods I've done have been reliability based (dual batteries, new clutch, modified exhaust) but I have so much fun taking it out. I keep up with my mates in their Rangies, GQs and 100 Series Cruisers (all on 33in muddies) mainly because it's so light. It's all about picking a line (except in the mud).

I'm starting on my first Sierra and I haven't even driven it yet but as soon as it gets a RWC and the Engineer ok's the detail of my planned mods it will be modified and I have no great desire to drive it stock on or off the road. It'll be locked, geared and on bigger rubber and I'm quite happy to learn its offroad capabilities in that form. To each their own
