Hello all , my names is matthew. I'm over here in amerrka..right. I was curious about using a isuzu engine in a rover .If anyone has part numbers pictures ,etc I would truly appreciate any info on the combo. I want to build an aussie style trayback. I have the cab back ,109 chassis series three bulkhead and all the necessary body work to get the "look" I'm after. I have a pair of 101 fc axles that i want to use (detroit, rear and arb front ) the cv's have been massaged by bobby long. I'm going to spring it over .......blah, blah....I also have a 1960 88 swb with a vortec 350,np435, adapted to series t/case large pin, 2.88 low range. 3.54's ARBs RD56s maxi drive shafts, aeu2522 cv's (waiting to get bobby longed) four wheel disc brakes and scout p/s. NOT boasting , just letting you know that I'm not hill billy from Amerikka.Once I figure out how to post pictures, I"ll post some of my junk. Thanks in advance. :D

Hi Matthew,

There is plenty of info on fitting a 4BD1(T) here:
http://www.isuzudieselswapper.com/

You could use an LT95, but you would have to source a 4BD1 bellhousing from Australia, and some 0.998:1 transfer gears, but still you will be doing more revs on the highway than if you used a gearbox with an overdrive final gear. I have a (factory) LT85 behind my 4BD1 and I am glad of the 5th gear.

If I was you I would either use an Isuzu 5 or 6 speed manual, or one of the auto boxes listed on the website above.

The .996 transfer gears were used in later 4 speed Rangies, if you need some I have a set here on the shelf. The LT95 overdrives are reasonably common on Ebay UK if you wanted to go that way. You dont say what tyre size but with 101 diffs I guess you could run 35s or larger without too much trouble.

thanks for the link. A santana 5spd would be great. I was interested in the "a" version beceasuse the idler shaft in the t case is on timkin bearings? Am I correct?? I work for advance adapters an have access to all the tooling I can handle. The axle gearing I'm using is the original 5.57s with at least a 38" tall tire. How do you post pics?

I think you have to host them and link to them, like photobucket, then use the tags

Nice truck.

The santana (LT85) 5-speed is great on the highway, but not as strong or low-geared as the LT95 if you are building a mainly offroad truck. That is why I reccommended the Isuzu 5 or 6 speed box or an auto. Many of the isuzu boxes have a 5:1 or 6:1 first gear, a 0.8:1 or 0.7:1 top gear, and are bombproof - and probably cheap from truck wreckers in the states (some isuzu box trucks were rebadges as GMCs over there). But if you have an LT95 you may as well use it.

I can take a pic of the LT85-Isuzu bellhousing that is in my truck, but don't know if that will be much help. I think Dougal and Bush65 have some pics of their setups, but they are running Isuzu boxes and LT230 / Atlas T-cases respectively. Someone on the Aulro forum may have pics - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/

thanks for your help, I'm still having difficulty finding any images and data on the "Aussie" 3.9 110. I searched both of the links and have found no significant info. If you could take a picure or two it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

Mathew, as far as I know the LT95/4BD1 belhousing is still available direct from Land Rover Australia for about $1100AUD. Reasonably cheap considering you only ever have to buy one!.

It may be listed on their books, but try and order one.

Got two a couple of months ago for me and a mate out of Brisbane, but not through Land Rover Australia, and for less than half that price for both!, so they are around!. One was marked ADF, must've been surplus!.
