Change timing belt after 50,000 mail services ??

Hello members,
My dealer is adviced me to change my timing belt at my 50,000 mile service, is it really important ??
Please let me know your suggestions !

If the belt does let go, it could be new engine time. What car is it? I thought most timing belt intervals were closer to 100000km?

Yep I would agree most are replaced at 100000k. As DB48 says, what car.. Is that 50000 MILE so it's 80000 ks.. maybe.

theres a few cars that need doing at 50-60,000 kays. Its a $40-$90 part plus labour so its worth doing rather than smashing ya valves up if the motor is interference design.

As already stated, asking that question without saying what sort of vehicle is pointless... i.e Holden Astra's/Vectra's need them replaced every 60k where as lots of Toyota's are every 150k...and Alfa Romeos snap the timing belt before they are even due for replacement!

it could be a defender, i thought i heard somewhere the td5's need them every 50 or 60 thousand

I'd say it's some sort of jeep - the CRD engine perhaps? All the others still run pushrods

I think Peter is from the US but now lives in Australia and owns a later model Jeep wagon.
Peter is a polite person who is pretty well off but doesn't like spending money if he doesn't have to.
He is in his late 30's, married with 2 kids and is fairly new to posting on forums, but he has been around.
Pete has done the hard core stuff in the past but doesn't get out any more since his friends in Australia are not into 4WDing but he misses it.
Peter is generally not a computer type person but he is spending more and more time in front of the screen.
Peter will post again at about 7:30pm on the 1st of February to tell me I am wrong on all accounts.
Sorry I can't help with the belt thingy but someone else should be able to help now I have cleared things up.

That's all very funny and all....
X2 on what chunks said.
Some alfa's and other european stuff recommend 4 years regardless of Km's. With timing belts it's a case of "When in doubt, replace it!"
