98 GU questions

I am researching this vehicle for a mate,

It is a 98 GU 4.5 petrol on gas.

Being an early GU do they have any teething troubles to look out for?
Also what might be some good starting points as far as checking the vehicle prioir to buying?

We know how to basically mechanically check a vehicle so are looking for issues that might be relevant to this particular Patrol model.

thanks.

98 - pffttt... there's only 2!

Just FYI - my cousin bought a TI GU 4500 and about 12 months later he just bought a GenIII V8 and twin turbos for it. Food for thought.

What V8 engine? a 253 with 5 sparkplugs?
I know 4.5s can go well, like Raptor's turbo one, but yea, not that well. like the bloke saying his 4.8GU blows off every commodore hes been against n shit.

considering the 4.8 has 185kw and then injected commodore motor started with 165, that is reasonable that the 4.8 with gobs more torque and hp can blow the doors off a pissy 5l.

:)

That's what i'm getting at... it goes OK, but for the amount of fuel you chew you can get a lot more from other engines... hence the GenIII

then go against the pissy 215kw clubsport... or the more KW taxi... this bloke I spoke to blew them all to the weeds.

But I don't want to know if they can drag off v8s :finger:

I want to know if they have any issues or is there any real reason why he shouldn't buy one.

cheers

They are pretty slow and underpowered standard, especially with the tall gearing of the auto's (3.9 diff ratio's). The manuals have better gearing standard as top gear is 0.85:1 compared to the very tall 0.694 in the auto which makes it drop in and out of overdrive all the time when towing.

I turboed mine and it completely transformed it. It's now a pleasure to drive and you barely touch the throttle and it pulls pretty well.

Personally i reckon 4.625:1 or 4.875:1 gears are required if you have an auto GU patrol.
