Is my 1.3 sick?

well after reading that alot of you guys are running around on 31inch+ tyres, stock motors and can still hit 100km/h im not impressed.

ive got a stock 1.3 in my 95 sierra with 31's and stock gearing (untill gears from low range are delivered) and i go backwards in 5th so its 4th gear and about 90- 95 km/h. if i hold 4th gear pinned on flat road i could get too prob 110 after about 3 kays run up

i am guessing this is not normal?

Yep, I reckon that's normal. you're about 19% overgeared so instead of doing about 3350rpm @ 100kph, you're trying to do 2750 or so. if you downshift to 4th, your back to 3500rpm @ 100, which is what you need to be at.

A 1.3 doesn't make enough torque at 2750 to hold speed.

Regear your car, its the cheapest option, and makes it heaps better offroad. look for transfer case gears with about a 20% high range reduction and you'll be happy.

PS, as an aside, a 19% taller tyre on a landcruiser is a 38. nobody would expect much road performance with stock gearing and 38's on a cruiser and it's the same with a sierra.

Really Paul? I haven't been in a stock geared sierra that will hold 5th with 31' s on it.

Steve.

EDIT do you mean No, it's not sick or No, it's not normal?

yea steve i have gears on the way from low range as we speak, i expected it to be this slow but, i have 2 mates with older sierras than mine one can wind his off the clock with 31's and the other can fry 30's on road in second gear, plus i keep seeing people on here talking about there stockas that still go rather well?

They must have some pretty healthy 1.3's because that's not my experience with stock geared cars.

It's all in the gearing. I can cruise at 100kph in 5th empty and 4th laden in my 660cc LWB car that has the same power and less torque than a stock 1.3... and I'm running 34" tyres with TT 6.4 transfer gears and 4.11 diffs.

thats cos 27" is standard. i can get mine to the 'h' (on Kmh) at the bottom of the speedo. but yeah, thats stock as a rock.

McGyver, how much are you paying 4 the gears? i am keen to get 31's too.

oh well that makes me feel a little better, so i will wait for these gears i suppose, and shit i hope nuthin goes wrong with the gears seeing as they will be put in next week and next w/e ive got a campin trip 5-6 hours drive up the coast.

When was the last time u had your carb cleaned? Seen quite a few cases where the vacume port to open the secondary throat has been blocked by carbon and hence crappy performance.

i got 32s and i find it hard to hit 100 in any gear.nearly the only time i can is down hill with no wind... but yea 100 is pretty scary in my car. so i just cruise on 85-95 in 4th up hill and 5th in the flat/down hill.

i was really hoping gearing would help me hit 100 but didnt really. offroad its unreal tho. so if i wanna go fast i just take my DD subaru.

Don,t have a problem doing 100 , with stage 4 rockhopper , 4.88 hilux gears , 35's , does it quite easy , sits arround 3600 at 100 and arround 4000 at 110. But i have a few engine mods , Cheers Paul.

was thinking your blown and EFI arnt you.

does anyone think mines underpowered ? just interested.

Vicelore , you might need a cam and a bit of head work , I paid arround the 500 mark for a fully ported head and a cam regrind , matched inlet and outlet ports , valve guides chopped away completely so it breathes very well. Yes I do have EFI , A TBI off a 90 model swift , cost 300 for complete kit , made my own adapter to fit standard manifold and cut the two holes out of the standard manifold to make just one hole , currently running 3 pound till it is dyno-tuned , revs too arround 6500 rpm but it pulls right through the rev range , Cheers Paul.

if I was ever going to replace my engine i'd probably go a 1.6 bottom end and DOHC GTI head and EFI. apparently is a sweet combo that the swift guys use in the racing circuits....thats about all i know about it.

edit: did some digging around...a claimed ~95kw at the flywheel with exhaust and intake, plus buggerising around with the ECU, bigger injectors, etc...

The GTI head flows LESS air than the 16V SOHC vitara/Baleno head. Add that to the age of the GTI motors, the cost of the head, the stuffing around with the dizzy, etcetceetc

A g16B Baleno runs nearly 72 KW and 134Nm - the highest stock torque of a G motor and almost the most power with no stuffing around with building a bitsa.
