Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Anyone interested in puting a Mazda Turbo diesel and 3 speed auto into their Sierrajavascript:emoticon(':armsup:')
Armsup. The reason I cose a 3spd auto is that they are shorter than a 4spd. That means less mods and by the time you have 'big' tyres would wouldn't know the difference over a 4spd. From my investigations it would be a popular conversion but no-one has got it sussed. The hard part is finding the right gearbox at the right price. I spent a couple of hours at an 'big' auto transmission workshop going over the options. I reckon I have it sussed, although I am waiting for find a LWB Sierra to do the conversion on. If you know of a LWB and/or your intersted PM me.

E) watch the gearing - a direct third gear with everything else stock and 33" tyres gives about 90km/h @ 3000 rpm- with 3.7:1 diff gears. throw in (more common) 31" tyres and your'e looking at 86 km/h at 3000rpm and 110 at 4000 rpm. with the transfer case gears many of us have or want you're not looking at a road drivable car with a 3 speed auto and the low revs of a diesel.

G) will the motor fit? I spoke to a guy years ago who put a mazda diesel in a sierra and he ended up with approximately NO sump and MASSIVE bumpstop spacers. (it was also a manual and the shift pattern was backwards, ie 1st gear was where reverse normally was and 5th was where 1st normally was. apparently "you got used to it" 12 months later it still hadn't been on the road properly due to fitment issues.

H) what does this thing weigh? Heavy motors really hurt the balance of the suzuki.

I'm not trying to be negative - I like auto's, and diesels a lot, but on the information you have provided I don't think anyone could decide if this is viable or not.

isnt there a factory 1.9l TD from india? a peugeot or something?

No, not that I a aware of. There are diesel Jimny's in europe, and they are 1.9 Renault (?) not out of the question but a very expensive and complicated swap.

Plus, 300Nm of torque (what these motors produce) would murder the driveline of an off road car.

The Jimny gets a Renault 1.5 but the Spanish Santana version of the Sierra gets a 1.9 diesel but I can't remember who's.
