hi all, im new to this site, and ive just bought a sj410 89, in need of abit of tlc.

.the starter motor dosnt work apparently the solonoids are sticking, is there any way to fix this or should i buy a new starter motor for it?

.the drivers window dosnt wind down, i actually checked the mechanism and its not even conected, so i think i can sort that out

.its blowing fuses. i had a look at the fuses in it yesterday and replaced all the blown ones. the back lights started working, but the next time i went out to drive it (in the same day) i noticed they wernt working again, so i checked, and it had blown both 5A fuses that i had replaced, but the rest of the fuses were fine. does this mean that i need to put i higher amp fuse in there, or is there something electrically wrong?

.its had 2inch shackles put on it, which i dont atall need. how do i remove these?

.the fuel gauge isnt working, it just shows zero and the light is always on

.the speedo dosnt work.

apart from the above niggles, its a real nice car, with pretty minimal rust. the guy i bought it off just used it for light offroading... or so he said.

ive got some pics of it, its in need of abit of a scrub!

thanks!

fuses are tricky - you have to try replicate whats making it blow the fuse to find the best solution.... i had a similar issue one winter, and it was the air vents leaking water onto the fuse box!!! haha

shackles are easy - jack up the zuk from the chassis until the shackles are near 90* vertical... undo the nut/bolt on the leaf spring end of the shackles and wiggle the bolt out from the rubber bush... undo the top one and then fit your replacement shackles the same way. If you're going to this trouble its probably worth buying new bushes for the springs and shackles too - get the rubber ones, theyre smooth and soft, and go easy on the grease - dont want to attract sand and crud.

Fuel guage is the sender unit inside the tank - you can fix that - check the bible or do a search - heaps of info on that.

speedo not working - check the cable that comes from the t/case through the floor, behind the dash and into the instrument cluster... you can unscrew it from the t/case and check its not shagged, and the same behind the instrument cluster - no rounded edges causing it to slip. If that all looks ok, you're going to want to open the instrument cluster up and check the spring is still on the back of the dial - it may have even snapped off (?). You should be able to score these parts from a wrecker. Once you get it working, check its accuracy with a GPS unit to make sure you're legal.

They are normal style shackles then. Folding shackles are Grimace.

okay, ive fixed the starter motor

Now im onto the lights... how should i go about looking for the fault? what obvious things would there be to show why its blowing fuses?

i bought a new solonoid for the jeep which seemed to do the job for the starter.

i took it to a garage and they charged 40£ to re wire the tail lights, and that worked till i got it washed and water got in so im jus gona sylacone the fuck outa that, so that should be alrite..

where can i get an sj speedo cable from?

and does any one have any ideas why the fuel gauge is reading empty all the time? i was told the float may have broken or rusted in place... if thats the reason how do i fix it.?

another thing is the window is disconected from the winder in the drivers side, do i have to take the door apart? or is there an easier way? thanks

It's dead easy to remove the interior trim. Couple of screws in the grab handle and one inside the window winder (plus a circlip) then it just pops out along the edges. Good chance the window has simply fallen off the winder, so just put it back on and make sure nothing fouls.

As for a speedo cable they're on the Aus eBay site all the time, if you've got paypal that's an easy option.

PS Are you sure a 5A fuse is right? Mine are 15A...

your fuel guage problem could be related to the speedo not working. it sounds like someones had the instrument cluster out for some reason and hasn't fitted all the connections properly when refitting. easy to check, just unbolt the instrument cluster and pull it away slightly and check the connections and wiring behind it.

ive already taken the trim off the door, what it is, is the window glass has disconected from the actual mechanism, ive tryed putting it back, but theres no way i can do it, i cant push it enough to make it slot back in..

and also, where abouts is the instrument cluster?

AND haha

i checked the fuses for the tail lights and they are 10A which is what is correct according to the mech. cheers!

Instrument cluster = speedo, guages etc. Get into the back of the dash and see if all the connections are in place.

Looking at the manual it looks like you have to remove the bailey channel (the rubber strip that is on either side of the glass at the bottom of the frame) to be able to move the glass enough...

alright ill give that a go.

alright, i just checked the wires under the steering column and there all plugged in okay.. what now?

no no, not under the steering column.
the instrument cluster is the pod with all the guages in it, there are 2 screws on the underside of the pod, unscrew them and with a bit of jiggling you should be able to remove the pod from the dash, the connections you need to check are in the back of this.

hope this is a bit clearer for you.

Fuel light??? I don't have that in my 89. I might have to get a cluster from the UK!
