Fixing front end troubles

Ok some of you guys would have seen what was happening with my front end on sat night , after the torque rod was ripped off the front , my spring packs not begin clamped, were opening up way to much creating to much axle wrap and dropping the shaft. (see attached pics).

What would the best thing to do, id like to leave the torque rod off , if i do this, i will get my front spring packs re drilled and also get spring clamps put on, will this reduce the axle wrap enough to stop it happening again.

or do i build a beefier torque rod and mount it futher foward where the dropped spring hanger is, to control the axle wrap whilst leaving the spring packs open to allow more flex.

I hope this makes sense as it way to early on a monday to be thinking.

here is the pics of one of the causes of the trouble.

it seems that the upper joint on the torque rod has siezed, so when teh vechile was flexing all the movment was begin transfered into the mount and the shity toyota welds, so basically it ripped the mount clean out of the chassis rail right on the weld.

After doing some research on pirate i might try running an extra leaf above the main leaf and adding some spring clamps.

Clamping the spring packs back together will stop the shaft from seperating although it will still be at the end of its travel and likely break the slip yoke, so your only real option is to go long slip and xover steering.

i dont understand how crossover will reduce axle wrap and stop my breaking the yoke, i will be putting a long slip shaft in, but for now the dropped j arm will have to do as i dont have the $$$ to do a power steer / crossover conversion right now.

Yep crossover ain't goina stop axle wrap or the slip from seperating but its only the next step along the mod highway.

With crossover steering, you have no need for the torque rod as you will not experience any bump steer. The longer slip front shaft is an eventual necessity anyway.

Keep the torque rod, beef it up, add lots of bracing to the mounts, and reclamp your spring packs. Flex is overrated...everything is a compromise, especially when the money is tight.

indeed, im not chasing huge flex, im going to try beefing the spring packs and getting some new clamps fitted, and ill give that a test run to see how it goes, if i have to run a torque rod again i will, but prefer not to.

bump steer is not a real issue as its a trail only rig and only driven to the trails and home again

If you abandon the torque rod but retain push pull steering, there is a higher chance of breaking the already vulnerable drivers side steering arm.

hmm good point
i guess ill be making up a new torque rod now then aswell

Also, the torque rod will prevent axle wrap (even though it's a compromised design, it will still help), separating the shaft and damaging your springs.
