Steering box very slopy in stockman ute (Now fixed) T/ you

l Have a suzuki stockman wide track ute Aussie indian motor, but the steering box is very slopy, and was wounding if their was any way of taking the slack out of it, or do l have to buy a rebuilt unit

As this is a boom spraying truck, And Have just put,
-New efi springs and shockers
-shackle extenchions made my self 50 mm/ over stock front-75mm/ over stock rear
-31x10.5x15 Maxxis Mudders + Black rims F100
-It only has 35,00.00km on the clock from new
-Re upholstered seats
-Plus lots of over things

have just about finished her and it's, starting to look ok.

So any information would be much appreciated to finish my truck of.

Check the rubber steering coupler which goes between the steering shaft and the steering box and make sure its not torn. Also check the connector on the end of the steering shaft which slides over the splined shaft coming out of the steering box. On my maruti i had the spline wear away inside this connector and it was only held on by the bolt. This caused a huge amount of steering play. Replaced the end bit and steering was back to normal.

Thank you for the responce, Sorry that l have not responded until now, As a contractor, l spend a lot of time working in the Vic Alps, Have looked at the the steering rubber it's ok, will check the other this week end.

l notice that you have a jimmy steering box in your zuk, Was it hard to put it in.

35 000 and already a worn steering box?

on top of the steering box there is a nut with a flat blade screwdriver in the middle. Crack the nut of, tighten the screwdriver part, then tighten the nut back up.

Thats why i think it may be the connector i was talking about. Mine went with only 30 000 on the car. I dont think the previous owner tightened the bolt up properly leading to the connector wearing the spline out.

The jimny steering box is a straight bolt-in. If you use a vitara p/s pump bracket the jimny p/s pump bolts directly to the engine. Buy a 'V-Belt / Flat Belt Pulley' from http://www.trailtough.com/ because the jimny pump uses a multi-v belt. A very simple install and power steer is :armsup:

Well this is the case for 1.3L or 1.6L engines (except 1.6 already have multi-v belts), im unsure if a 1l has a different block which might mean the pump doesnt bolt up

Thank you for your responce, l am back from the high country, And l have just cracked the lok nut, And tightened the screw, Srewed it in a fair way, It Has taken the slack out of it, (Feels Good now).

Hi Zooker,
Thank you for your responce, The power steering unit will be happening soon, Also have heard that the V6 out of a grand vitra will bolt straight in, And it will mate up to the my bell housing and clutch, As l need more power.
- Have un-loked the lok nut on the steering and screwed in the ajustment bolt and it has taken out all the slack , Feels good now.

Are you sure? I'd struggle to think of a motor that would be as hard to fit. They're VERY wide, have different engine mount positions, the bolt pattern is G16 pattern not G13 or whatever you have.... and they're not really that great a motor anyway, especially for the price. (which is often high) On top of that, routing the exhaust on the drivers side, steering shaft clearance, cooling....

Probably better to look at the more common 1.6, it should do fine.

Hi Steve,
Have some questions for you if you do not mine, As a spray contractor, My little zuk ute is being turned in to a boom spraying rig, And, l am finding that low range in my zook is not that low, And was looking to go a bit lower, with the 31s on, l Don't want to go with the rockhopper tranfer case low range thing, l am thinking of changing the diff ratio to bring it back a bit below standard?
- Do you know where to get replacement diff centers?
- Do you know where l can get a replacment carpet for the front of my zuk ute as well.
