Any know what the law is on making your own box trailer in QLD?

Do you need some sort of manufacturing license ?

I am looking at converting alum tray from a single cab into a trailer

Theres not much to it really, You go to the DOT and get a chassis number and a manufacturers plate,Build your trailer within their specs, stamp the chassis number on, fill out a form and get rego. I was supprised at how easy it was. Some links that may help you

Hope this helps you out

scarey really they don't even inspect it if it's rego'd under 750kg, notice I said rego'd

even if its over 750kg regoed (car carrier up to 4.5 tonne) all they do is check the measurements and check the lights..dont even check the work on it...thats even scarier

with a box trailer rated under 750kg you dont even need to take it with you to get regoed..just fill out the form (self assessment form) and take it to transport..as long as your measurements are right (the main one is that the measurement from axle to back of trailer needs to be shorter than from axle to front of trailer) then its all good

essentially with a box trailer the onus is on you to say it is safe and all lights etc and everything work

a 6 metre trailer would weigh about 800kg when built so to make it even worthwhile building to carry something it would need brakes and be regoed as a pig trailer same as a car trailer..i have built a 7.8 metre deck dual buggy carrying trailer and had it regoed as a 4495gvm..it weighed 1280kg so is able to carry 3215 kg...

as long as you build it within the specs it is fine..anything that is going to be over 750 kg needs at least one braked axle...one braked axle gets you to 2000kg..over that you need two braked axles and a breakaway switch which can get you up to 4500kg as long as the axles and springs are sufficient

ah cheers

so is there any legalities stopping a car trailer from being framed and used as a box trailer? (for carrying a lot of timber)

None... as long as the box you fit doesn't exceed the dimensions given when the trailer was registered.
There are plenty of enclosed car trailers around.

and also as long as you dont exceed the weight that you regoed the trailer for as well

2.5 tonne will require two braked axles and a breakaway switch

can anyone point me in the right direction to find the guidlines the trailer needs to be built to.

I was looking at building a coil sprung unit using two GQ front arms reversed and panhard bar. Springs and shocks would be determind when the trialer was at the stage that i could messure up properly
