I have a 1984 60 series diesel, recently purchased. There is a is a small pipe connected between the gearbox and the transfer case filler plugs. There is a brass fitting tapped into each plug to connect the pipe. Can anyone tell me why?

at some stage your seal between the transfer and gearbox has leeked pushing all the out from one into the other the pipe is put there instead of fixing the seal so the oil will keep circulating instead of running your transfer dry

Also Cheap Insurance, even if you check the Transfer case/Gearbox oil levels every 5000Ks when you change your engine oil, to ensure the oil in both boxes are level, a long high speed trip could allow the gearbox to suck the oil from the transfer case, if the connecting seal is worn.
