A Vitara auto will bolt up. 2 options - trimatic 3 speed from a carby vitara or AW-4 4 speed from an efu vitara.

the trimatic is cheap and strong (and chap to build/modify) but has no overdrive, so your highway gearing will be equivalent to running in 4th now. It's short though - you'll only need to take about 80mm out of your jackshaft and the transfer won't need to move.

the AW-4 is very strong and has excellent gearing. It also has electronically controlled shofting so there are lots of options for controlling it. Its LOOOOOONNNNGGG though so you will likely need to move the transfer back about 2" to give you a usable (i.e vibration free) jackshaft.

Both auto's need a custom tailshaft adapter made to use a 1.3 jackshaft.

I'm just completing a trimatic conversion into a WT sierra with a baleno motor and is seems like the goods, but this car is already quite tall geared on the highway (3.9 diffs, S4 Rockhopper, 35.5" tyres) so it doesn't really need the overdrive of the AW-4, but even so, it will be spinning about 3800rpm @ 100km/h

the AW4 will need crossmember modifications to fit into a 1.3l sierra, it only just fits into a 1L.
and it's too long for a shorty, you'll end-up with a real short tail shaft.

go for the 3spd, its a hole lot easyer to fit.

Sweet Thanks for your input. its not going in a standard shorty, when finished the wheel base will be around 100" so its not realy a concern with having a short drive shaft. As for highway driving Im not going to be doing alot of that so overdrive might not be a concern.Sounds like the 3speed will be the easier option.

There is one other question though.I will be running 37s I have 4.1 gq diffs what transfer gearing would be good 6.1 or 6.5 or 8.1 im not to sure on what would be low enough.

Hey steve let me know how your conversion goes when it finished.Sound like it will be good.
