Hey all

i need to fabricate a custom tank to sit under my tray. Can anyone point me in the direction of some best practice guidlines for construction, build up threads, construction materials etc.

does anyone know what is absolutely necessary and what isnt' - i.e. surge tank, rollover valve, expansion chamber, breather etc.

I'm no expert, but I replaced my tank with an aftermarket long range tank - so I'll tell you what mine's like.

Expansion chamber - yes. If anything, I think mine's too small, as I've had a full tank "expand" out through the charcoal canister.

Breather would be an ADR thing - beyond a certain age (about 1975, I think) the tank must vent through a charcoal canister.

Surge tank is only required to keep fuel up to the fuel intake. My tank has a submerged pump which sits into a "well" - essentially just a wall around the pickup location, to trap some fuel around the pump during climbs/side slopes etc. I don't have an external surge tank.

If there's a "rollover valve" associated with my tank I have NFI where it is.

I'm pretty sure my tank is made of aluminium alloy, but I don't know which grade. From memory, sides are 2mm and bottom is normally 3mm. I requested mine be manufactured with a "double wall" bottom, but I have no (simple) way of knowing if they did.

I contemplated having somebody make a tank to my own design (but I couldn't design anything significantly larger than what Brown-Davis built for me - options are limited in a shorty.) I was told to ensure my design allowed a 10mm gap all round (between tank & chassis rails, body etc) and to use a 3 point mounting (to allow for chassis flex.) Funny enough, the Brown-Davis tank uses 3 point mounting, and the gap all round is probably more like 20mm.

under tray in what??? i had two standard tanks in my patrol one at the back one under the front of the tray cheap tanks already adr approved just find a tank that fits may be easier tank will come with pick ups feul sender unit filler hose etc
