2.8l diesel gearbox prob

Before I manage to start modding my 4 runner I need to sort some bugs out. The gearbox is as noisy as hell. Its a 5speed and diesel box (89 4runner). I changed the oil and put in some nulon g70 and it didnt make a difference at all. When I changed the gear oil it had masses of metal filings in it. The plug looked like it was covered in used grinding paste.
Soooo, the real question here is what price should I be looking at to get a change over box. Might as well get something good rather than stuffing around with something that is already on its way to gear box heaven.

They are going for around $450-$550 secondhand
I bought one a while back for $500 with complete transfer, that was a pretty good buy.

If it's a "G" series box, then it's a bent Lay Shaft. Quite common in this box. Just get another on and take your chances!
The "R" series will be 5 times stronger, but you need a different Bell Housing for it.

On the silver plate on your firewall is a plate.
Look for the Trans/Axle code. If it starts with G or R, you will be able to tell.

Thanks v6hilux. Just went and checked it out, shes a G series.
Would it be worth converting to r series or just fix her up and keep on keeping on?

Depends if you drive like a "P" plater or an old man!
I'm almost an old man, I got a G and I drive like a "P" plater, so I need to pay for my replacement boxes.
I really don't know if the bell housing for a R series box is available for your 2.8L engine.
You will need the expert advice of others on this!
If it's not available, then I suggest getting a Commodore engine and then a R series adapter is available, guess, but I could be wrong!
Also, the r series might require different length drive shaafts front and rear, but I could be wrong!

meh, im an old man with 3 kids ( 27 ) I drove my paj to death so I want to look after the runner. In saying that I want to use it in the rough stuff but Ill still keep it mild ( tight lsd, 31's, mild lift, ) <-that sort of stuff. As much as I want 4 inches of lift, lokkers, crawlers gears and stuff, its time to look at reliability.

ive got an old G52 gearbox thats just starting to go rumbly in 5th, but thats to be expected after 340,000kms.
Its getting ditched for a R151, but im bolting a 1KZ-TE bellhousing to it, and a 1KZ-TE to that!

An R150/151 from a Surf will fit fine, just make sure you get the front & rear tail shafts as I believe the R series is a slightly longer box!
Being an early LN130 4 runner does it have push button transfer case & ADD (Auto Disconnecting Differential)???
Other options I've seen are push lever, chain driven transfer &/or free wheeling hubs with no ADD.
I've got both G52's that came out with the 2 different chain driven transfer cases bolted to 2.8 with IFS. They are for sale, but unfortunately freight would be a killer.
Cheers

Na, shes not a push button. Comes with manual hubs too.
